O.K. guys,

The deadline has passed for Colorado. Where did you apply, and with how many points?

Me: 66, 3rd season, 7 points.

Best of luck to all that applied!!

Brian, I am a non resident as well and put in for the exact same thing as you did. What do you think our odds are for 62 with no points with the new point banking system that CO enacted this year?

I don't know why, but I was calculating 13% odds. I think I was taking the number of nonresident licenses issued - 146. It looks like there were 107 non residents that put in with at least 1 preference point, which I assumed were all drawn. The same report show 284 non residents with 0 points putting in for the remaining 39 tags (146-107). I figured 13% by taking 39 divided by 284. Have I been doing this wrong the whole time?

Your calculation is right. 13.73% odds last year for 62 3rd - Non Res with 0 points. You have to minus those who drew above you then use the number of apps remaining and the quota remaining to calc the odds left for that point class, etc. Your logic is dead on. If Colorado didn't use the pure pref. point system, it wouldn't be that straight forward.

Wanting to continue building my NR bonus points up to 4, I am targeting a 2nd choice hunt in 75/751 3rd rifle. Both the Hunting Fool and the Monster Muley Hunting Report [yes, I did patronize the gents at this website] say I should pull a tag.

I know this will be "combat hunting" as there are 525 tags for deer and OTC elk tags for this season, but I did it for two reasons: (1) to learn the ropes about MD hunting [never hunted big game in the lower 48 period - only hunted Alaska] before I draw a coveted high-bonus-point tag and (2) I figure that I have a good chance being an experienced woodsman who knows how to hunt hard and in heavy cover and am comfortable being a long way from civilization [e.g roads, hotels, ATV, etc.] Will camp or bivy if I find a good spot.

SierraFool - I think your looking at it wrong. Your looking at DM062P3R while I'm looking at DM06203R. Or maybe I'm looking at it wrong, what does the "p" stand for?

"P" is Private Land Only Tags
"E" is Early, "L" is Late, "O" is normal if such a concept exists :) Really never heard what it stands for. Overall maybe?

I don't mean to get off the subject of CO deer, but I don't quite understand the NM draw. If you go to the huntodds.com website and look at NM mule deer for example. Take a look at deer hunt 1-104: how and why would there be any 2nd choice applicants drawn? It looks like there are enough 1st choice applicants to cover the quota. Being a non resident non guided, I would have thought my odds were 34% (46 / 132), but the website is saying 10.36%. I don't get it.

Cory-

You have to realize how NM's draw process works. Here is the quick version:

They take all apps (Res, NR and NR with a guide) and issue them a number. Using this number, they roll through them one by one. Say they pull your app. They look at 1st choice, if the quota is gone, look at 2nd, then 3rd, etc. For example, I can draw deer 1-104 with my 3rd choice and you might not with your 1st choice.

It is very different than other states where 2nd choice only applies if tags are "left over" after 1st choice.

They key is everyone is grouped together and it's all about how high your app ends up.

With this in mind, odds need to be calculated using all apps for that unit - no matter the choice.

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread....

Here is the verbage from the NM's documentation:

"A computer program draws applications in random order. When an application is drawn, the computer attempts to fulfill the first hunt choice, subject to the quotas described above. If the first hunt choice is already filled, the computer will try to assign the second choice to that application and then the third choice. If the quota for your drawing pool has been filled for all three choices, the system will not issue a license(s) and will move on to the next application."

Maybe I out thunk myself. 2 of you put in for 3rd season in 66 like I did. I thunk everyone would migrate to the new 4th season. Now i don't thunk my 6 points will be enough. So much for thunking.

Thunking is good..........

Dang.... 61/3 last year and 10/4 this year...stretching them dang points out to the max....

I hunted there last year during 2nd rifle (oh and i think unit 45 is your 4th unit not 43), it was tough. I imagine 4th rifle would be awesome with only a handfull of tags (especially compared to the other rifle seasons). How many points are you applying with?

Moose 19 archery 3 points -0 weighted
Elk unit 10 "Y" code 7 points or archery 4, 441 2nd choice (? might draw?) or archery 19 3rd choice (guaruntee draw)
Antelope 87 6 points (should draw!)
Sheep S1 2 weighted points
deer unit 10 0 points hopefully unit 18 4th rifle 2nd chioce

I bought a point and waiting for a LO tag. If anyone had a could hunt last year with a LO tag can you send some info my way?

44, first archery season, gonna shot a muley and an elk in one week, yea right! At least I'll be in the mountains, instead of sweating my arse of in f*(^#*&^ south Texas!

74 early rifle with 5 points. Might be a stretch, there are some great bucks coming out of that hunt.

unit 22 3rd season 0 points. units 12,13,23,24 3rd season second choice guaranteed. Just looking to get out and have fun during the migration and maybe a couple nice ones might give us an opportunity.

Howdy,

Well, since the draws have been particularly unkind to me in the past three or four years, I took measures to make sure of drawing a deer tag in Colorado this year. Basicly, two master-degreed teachers helped fill out my form, then it was reviewed by a Professor from New Mexico State University. Then, just for added luck, I had my sweet wife KISS it before I mailed it.

Boy, are we superstitious or what!

Unit 53, 2nd rifle season.

Good luck folks.

Coach

Next year try using the CO online application system - it's a lot easier and pretty much error proof, as long as you select the correct hunting code.

Here's what I did:

Elk
Archery unit 40 - resident with 1 points
(probably not gonna draw that one)

Deer
3rd rifle units 18, 28, 37, 371 - resident with 0 points

If anyone has any advice on that deer tag, I'd definitely appreciate it!! It's a new area for me.

Good luck to everyone, hope you all draw your tags. Have fun scouting this summer!

David
