I live out of state and have been applying for 011-013 for the last 8yrs. I hope I might be able to draw a tag this year.I plan on scouting about 3 weekends if I draw, but I dont know where to start looking. I'm looking for bucks in the 170-180 range or is this wishful thinking

Been in that country a few times hunting coyotes, did not see too many deer. But from what I hear you could find a buck in that class if you had the time. You might want to use one of your scouting trips to learn the roads, and the other two save for more time hunting the last part of the season. Nevada has late dates this year, and the bucks in NV seem to start rutting a bit earlier than those in the Rocky Mountain States. So take full advantage of that last week of the season, and hope for cold weather.

170-180 Bucks are very rare, but you do have an excellent chance at a mature buck. Last year the resident success rate was 61% with 62% of those 4 points or better. For your first scouting trip, look at the areas suggested on the NDOW web site under Hunter Information Sheets. This will give you some good areas to look at, however, since these areas are traditionally hunted and well known, I'm not sure you'll find the class of buck your looking for. For the size of buck your looking for, you may want to look at less pressured areas. Is Forty-nine(sp) mountain in your area? I can't remember. This is private land near Vya, but if you can get permission to hunt there it has produced some huge deer in the past. I also agree with COSA that hunting the last week should be your best chance.
