I purchased a 4000 acre. ranch for recreation a couple years ago.
Only for Elk and mule deer. The ranch was dry (no Water) but had some good quality animals taken in the past, was over hunted by outffitters 8 - 10 bucks a year for 25 years. We stopped hunting it three years before i bought it, Since purchasing we have installed 2 well's, 12,000 gallons of water storage and 6 miles of piped water to 9 differant watering sights. Planted Winter Fat, Forage alfalfa, Burnett Clover, four wing salt bush. installed 3 solar panel systems to deliver the water.WE a;ready have great stands of Mountain Mohogany, Apache Plun oak, Pinion/Juniper stands.
The regional Biologist comes out and said that water is not that important and that the deer that use it do not help the States deer heard at all! That no matter what we do it will not be enough to help? BULL****.
He then stated that the ranch would never qualify for the deer incentive that they are trying to get started here.
On the mule deer incentive they said that they wanted to thank those ranches that provide help to mule deer and say thank you by giving tags, or longer season's
The only two ranches that they said was helping was Ted Turners, and the Elk foundations Double H.
What do you guys think?
Is 4,000 acres of prime Mule Deer, and elk land managed only for wildlife, aove and beyond the normal operations of the average ranch or not?
My wife took a 188 class mulie, the smallest taken so far has been a 165. We see between 15 - 30 bucks a day in this range.
I think that they need to start to recognise that they have failed the mule deer and they should sign up as many ranches as they can to promote wildlife habitat, and WATER! and work as a team to do it.
The public land that they manage see's hardley anything.
