Im going to be hunting northern utah this year during the general any weapon season and was just wondering how big of a buck would be considered a shooter. Also, does anyone know of any private land that can be accessed for a tresspass fee? Thanks,
Irl

Irl,

You may want to contact Cal Haskel @ (801)-562-0054, he runs several northern utah ranches, some cwmu and some general hunting. He will get you on a good buck for a small nominal trespass fee.

Unless you get a good piece of private land to hunt, don't get your expectations too high. Realistically, if you get way back into some of the areas and do a lot of scouting, you could get a decent buck, but otherwise your expectation should be a fork horn. They are better eating you know.

Most of the guys that have private land up here have their only select clients. So good luck with that, if you do get on some private land thats about your only choice for taking even a decent buck. The deer numbers are way down, I wouldn't get any expectations up at all on public land. All you'll see is ORANGE and fourwheelers

Good luck with greedy hands Haskell! Im hunting public this year because the 4x prices on the peice I used to hunt. I beleive their Elk horn property in N. Utah is like 2k for deer now. Let us know what he wants so we can have a good laugh:)

Cal Haskel (eddie haskel)!! United Sportsman!! And then another name now!! It's all the same beast!! I used to be a member of eddie haskels club. The land isn't the best and it surely isn't worth the money they want to hunt there. I would stay away from it if I knew then what I know now about the operations he's involved in!! Just an oppinion from an unhappy former member!!

No problem ismith!! Don't be discouraged about the Northern tag!! I have hunted almost all the general areas in Utah and now I just take the Northern tag, I never have to worry about drawing it!! We shoot some good bucks in the North even with the crowds!! To me the northern unit is just as good as the other general areas, so don't worry about it, just get as much info as you can about where you want to hunt and put your time into it, and I'll bet you will come out of it with a great experiance!! Good luck to you !!

I agree with liv4hunt. Doesn't look like I drew a So. tag this year. I don't even care. I hated Northern Region when I started hunting it 10 yrs ago. Now I love it. Some people say the numbers are way down. They should consider themselves lucky. I hardly ever saw a Northern buck in the mid 90's. If they saw more deer after the '93 winter than they do now, I'd like to know their secrets. If you don't like crowds and can afford a tresspass fee, look for something in Morgan County.

LAST EDITED ON May-07-06 AT 00:10AM (MST)[p]I would disagree whole heartedly with the "if it has horns shoot it" in the Northern General areas.

Find a place and spend time there every week, at least a morning or two, catch an evening and just GLASS!!

There are very nice bucks all over the northern region (in every canyon as my buddy claims!)you just need to take the time to find em! Also, you don't have to be miles back in anywhere. I took a respective Northern buck last year after not being able to find the monster we'd been unable to connect on during the archery and muzzy seasons. This buck was 10 minutes up the hill from my truck and I was a 5 minute drive from city limits. Just gotta know where they are!
