Just wondering what everyone thinks of this unit as a mule deer unit seems like it might have some real pigs out there in the wheat fields and such with the wilson creek PLWMA area in the north and the desert area to the south. The harvest totals are high for the unit as a whole (400+) and they don't do any late hunt permits for modern.

What do think about it?

Other than the two areas you mentioned I don't think you are going to find a whole lot bruisers, from what I hear it gets hunted pretty hard and with it being so open not many mature bucks survive once they hit 3 pt or better.

Beezley is a lot of open country like you pointed out with lots of private property. The public areas get pushed hard. Access to the private land can get expensive. I know one landowner collecting 5-10K for access.
Good Luck!

LAST EDITED ON May-06-06 AT 09:13AM (MST)[p]Escapement is the issue in much of eastern WA. Private, limited access ranches, are the only spots where bucks may bet a chance to mature into anything but a young 4x4. Getting access can be expensive. There are no late season permits because nothing is left standing after opening day. The Desert unit is good because harvest is very restricted.

For big bucks stick with the high mountain mule deer. Either pack-in, pray for an very early heavy snow or get lucky and win a Special Permit for the winter range hunts in November.

Pretty true what every one has said. There are some pigs in this unit. The problem is there is very little public land and what there is thats public just gets way to much pressure. I was out there for the opener last year and counted 17 people in the coulee I was hunting. Just went back to the truck and went to another peice of crp, it only had 4 guys on it and they just happened to push me a buck. That being said the private land holds some true monsters. I saw two dead bucks, 31" 191" gross and a 26" 188" gross last year that were in the same bachelor group and were shot side by side. If you can gain access you have the oppurtunity to get some nice deer.

I hunt archery so the crowds wont be as much of an issue plus the season is november/december. I was just looking at the amount of private land in the unit and there has to be places for the deer to hide wether its Wilson creek or in the desert area. Big bucks don't know when they are leaving the protection of desert wildlife area or a farm that has limited hunting especially when there is a hot doe to chase. One problem is that so many deer are dead by that time of year that the total numbers are way down. If 190 inch bucks are being shot in the unit there must be some escapement from year to year as well.

Just my 2 cents

I went out on Private property last year, with a guy I work with. He was rifle hunting.I was not hunting. His realitives own most the land Wilson Creek East. We got into a herd of about 60 Deer and the BIGGEST Buck in the Herd was a 170 Class Buck!!! His Cousin told us that was the Largest Buck on their Property? His other Cousin took a really nice 30" 180+ Buck on the adjoining property. Most the landowners out there HUNT!!! Even though it's mostly Private property it is still hunted HARD!!!They all try for the Biggest Buck!!! Food for thought!!!Their is a Guy from Othello? that has been trying to Purchase the Hunting rights in that area also. Good Luck

WAsharpstick. If you dont think those bucks know where the private land and the Desert Unit is, you might want to do some more homework. I video tape great bucks all the way up unitl September 1st on public land. When the dove hunters start blasting the bucks start moving. They most certainly know where those safe areas are, that is why they are 190 inches. You may get lucky but it will only be luck without a Desert tag.
