Do scents work with mule deer?

Does anyone use scents while hunting muleys? If so, what do you prefer? The CO season seems pretty early (September) for rut scents to work. So far, I don't think scents I've put out have generated any interest, so I'm wondering if they're just a waste of money for the mule deer season.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I wasn't able to find anything by searching the archives.

Thanks

I have found that they work well when hunting the rut. In Mexico I have used them quite a bit. I will normally hang scent in area where deer travel through like an arroyo and glass the downwind side during the middle of the day. It has worked well, we have never killed a big deer this way but have seen quite a few deer sniffing it out.

LAST EDITED ON May-05-06 AT 07:40PM (MST)[p]I've had excellant success with doepiss during the rut. I've used the store bought stuff but the best is the free stuff you find in nature. :) I also use buck tarsel glands. I always get my friends or family to save them for me and I rub them all over my hunting clothes. My wife doesn't let me come in the house but that just means I have more time to hunt. ;)

Years ago when the Utah muzzleloader was still in Nov. I had some doe in heat scent on me and was walking down a trail and heard someone coming up behind me. Thinking it was one of my friends, I turned around to see a 22" 4 piont coming down the same trail at about 20 yards. When he saw me turn and face him, he nearly jump out of his hide. I have never seen a more confused and shocked looking deer. I know he was folling my scent and I was in full camo.

it works pretty good during the pre-rut too Try rattling antlers too I have called in a some nice ones.

I used to use the doe in estrus the first yr I archery hunted. I will not use it again. I spotted a buck out and sprayed some on my boots and put the stalk on. Well got to within 7- yds and the buck was coming at me. I made a move to shifted and caught movement out of the corner of my eye and 15 yds behind me was a smaller buck with his head down coming right up after me. I spun my head and the buck froze and ran towards the other buck. But anyways if I would not have moved that buck could of had his way with me.
Never used it again.

Cool story. I haven't seen any reaction from scents I've used. Although that's not _quite_ the level of interest I want....
