CMR in Montana

Just wondering if any of you have hunted the Charles M Russell NWR in Montana. Didn't draw a deer tag this year but hope to next year. Sounds like a great area for deer and elk but I have no first hand experience. Any info or input is apreciated.
Thanks!!

True, its ok for resident muleys, there is a fair population of resident elk (some with arrows sticking out of their hindquarters or necks) and the CMR (and surrounding land) has an incredibly high population of humans. The human migration begins in early September and ends the end of Novemeber.
Hope that helps.

What has been said is true. However; there are some good places to hunt---no monsters though. They just can't get big enough out there. Name your poison--hunting pressure, harsh winters, etc.

One of the problems with finding a good area to hunt is that the country is pretty large and areas that look identical may have completely different deer populations. That being said, it is a great place for someone who likes to hike---travel is allowed on numbered roads only---and some of those can be impassable.

Anyway---good luck.

Thanks for the info guys. I know all to well about the crowds of people that migrate to large tracts of public land in the fall. But it sounds like if you wear off a little more boot leather you might have shot at least. Besides it gets a little boring riding around in the truck all day with the spotting scope clamped to the window. Thanks again. If any one else has any experience in the CMR would love to hear..

As the other posts stated, CROWDED.

USFWS is out there too, monitoring the mobs boating to their secret spots, checking your tree stand set ups (no screw-in steps!) and flying to monitor off-road abuse. The CMR is the best non-kept secret for MT, and every out-of-stater likes to start there, first. Meanwhile the BLM and FWP are dealing with problematic landowner/outfitters ("ghost" camps, "ghost sign-age" and "ghost" padlocks on "ghost" gates on public roads).

This is all fine and dandy--- it keeps the crowds busy, and away from the really good spots....??!

I'll keep holding for that rifle tag...and when the crowds are down.

ghost padlocks can easily be cut by ghost bolt cutters. I've ran into the same happening in Wyoming also.
