hello, all. new to this site and first time posting. looks like i and my father were able to pull antlered deer tags in area 051. it was our second choice but the biologist for the region claims the past couple wet springs have made for some impressive antler growth. this spring seems to be shaping up with more of the same. looking for any input you guys would care to give regarding this unit. we plan to backpack hunt. thanks in advance......jake.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-06 AT 03:13PM (MST)[p]If your serious about backpacking go to the wilderness area. Hinkey Summit Area is very popular/crowded. If you don't mind not seeing a lot of deer, try the Owyhee desert area. The Osgoods used to be good a long time ago, and the numbers are starting to come back. Deer numbers are generally down in 051 though.

thanks guys, i'll be tracking down those leads. any of you other nevada buck slayers have anything to share about this unit? thanks..........jake.

squaw tit, and solid silver.also saw some nice deer below buckhorn mtn. in the flats.

thanks sherman. currently chasing down maps for the region. we'll be speaking with the bio again and making a couple scouting trips this summer. i'll be taking the entire season off so i'd like to locate a couple high basins, and some lowland country to hunt. pretty exited cuz this is the first decent deer tag i've drawn since '97. so realistically, what do you fellas think represents a "shooter" buck in this region? thanks again.......jake.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-06 AT 05:02PM (MST)[p]I would say a shooter buck would be 150-160", but since you are taking the whole season off.. I would not pass anything over 170". If you don't see anything the first week or so, come back the last week, especially with the late dates this year, the rut will be starting by then. ShermaNv gave you some good areas to start, also look at Horse Cyn if your up for a good hike.

take 290 through paradise then take 084 over hinkey summit this gives you a good look at your whole area, follow road 084 to 531 and you will hit martin creek there is a great camp area just as you pass the creek on your left back in the trees.
i saw the best deer in and around that area last year you will need a nevada atlas.

See ya there, I'll be helping my father out with his tag.
If it were my tag, I would be hiking into the wilderness area from Paradise Peak south. Access can be improved by knocking on some doors. Jason

thnks to all. computer problems have limited my response. will be back once i get it straightened out. thanks again.
