Well after 5 years of applying I finally got a tag. Its for the rifle hunt in units 202, 205, 206.

A couple of guys said it was a REAL good tag, others said if it doesn't snow in the Sierras, a 24" 4 X 4 would be the best you'll see.

Anybody live in these areas that has the scoop on what really goes on out there?

I've been hunting/guiding in AZ for over 30 years, sure don't mind helping out over here..

I have hunted 201 a couple of times in december. In that country you need alot of snow in the sierras to put them in there. As far as a 24 inch 4x4 if you see a good one drop the hammer. You are hunting mostly California bucks.Thats about all I know. Don

LAST EDITED ON Jun-16-06 AT 12:54PM (MST)[p]The further west you go you will get into migrating CA bucks if there is weather. You will obviously need snow to really kick the migration in. There are some resident bucks in the higher ranges of 202 in the Wassuks. Get your maps and get up high if there is no snow. It is stark, open and desolate country. Your typical Great Basin habitat with mostly sage and pinon with some aspen draws high in the riparian drainages. Its way open country conducive to long distance, and long term glassing. If I were you and if there was good snow, I'd try and catch the bucks coming out of CA and down into the low country. If there isn't any snow, I'd get up high in the Wassuks and really glass. I can't even begin to stress how lonely that country is. Make sure you take emergency and vehicle recovery gear in your rig. Good luck. It's a good tag for mature bucks but don't go expecting a slammer. Personally, if I saw a 24" 4x4 I'd not hesitate. Yes there are bigger, but that is a good buck for the area.

Bigpig:

Thanks for the info. I have a few 24" 4 X 4's on the wall, so those kinds of bucks get a "free ride" with me.

Looking for a bommer, so may have to eat the tag, which I don't have a problem with.

Got great glass (Swarovski 15's and ST 80) and I believe I have good glassing skills and don't mind spend a few hours behind them.

I'm gonna try and get some maps and make at least one pre-season trip up there to familiarize myself with the country.

Got a lot of time to hunt, but I guide here in AZ and November is our prime time too, so have to see what happens when the results come out next month.

Thanks again for the heads up.

If I can be of any help in AZ to you guys, let me know. One good turn deserves another...

"Info",Martin "Go with who brought You".Dave aren't You Going with ??? I better check over in "Lopes" section,He maybe asking for "Info" on unit 231 !!! Have a Good Hunt, guys ---

Bruce:

I just spoke with "the Big Guy" and he says he got a antelope tag too! And in the same unit!

You had too many NR's apply there, we got two out of the three offered...

I suspect Dave will be around, at least he says he will, but he has the Hulsey syndrome, you know promises to be there but you may never see him...

From what I'm gettin here, looks like a fat 24" hunt....sure not something I was hoping for. Oh well, there has to be at least ONE boomer out there.

Only 57 resident and three NR tags in those three units, so lots of country to look at, just got to find that "special" buck so you have something to put in your folder....

Oh well, off to Lake Mohave at 0200, got a tournament out of Cottonwood Nev. starting at 0430...

See ya!

Don

Hey Bruce!

My other buddys hunt is most of the month of October in 231 for deer. He got 32 for lopes for the archery season. If I can get Martin up there the last 2 weeks of the hunt he'll be just fine.....if....and I say if, I dont draw an Az. late hunt. Probably aint happening though.

Don,
I have hunted 2,5,&6 for the last 2 yrs (youth) and have 2 youth tags for my kids this year also for the same area.
Plan on hunting late in the season, after some good storms come in the Sierras, I usually hunt the weekend after Thanksgiving.
1st year my son shot at 32" 6x5, hit the brisket area and we tracked for 5mi. till the bleeding stopped, we saw the same deer again at 15yds but I was in line of fire, The last day he took a 28" 3x3. Last year my son settled on a heavy base old 3x2
or if you count the eye guards it was a6x5 with 7-1/4" bases.
Very unique! My daughter passed on the 24" 4x4. She was able to shoot at a 30" 5x5 at 250 yds, but missed. She is more determined this year to get 30"+.
I don't mind sharing info on this area, as it is very large and desolate. Be prepared!
If you want more specific info, PM me then I will give you my E-mail there.

Don,
I din't mean to discourage you at all. You are obviously very experienced and have no problem letting a 24" 4x4 walk (of course some of those can be big too, I killed a 24" buck that scored 199!) so more power to you. If you have the time and patience to pass up what a lot of people would consider good deer, you may kill a bomber. They are there, just not around every pinyon. Again, a lot is weather dependent. If I had that tag and if there was weather, I'd be holding out for a 28" 175+ class buck. If it was hot and dry, a 24" would probably be going home with me.

I just put in the word for you guys you will have a early snow this years,You guys will see alot of nice bucks.

Bigpig:

I do appreciate your insight on this hunt. Like I said. it's all new to me, but at least I have some idea of what is going to happen and what to expect.

I like freaks and geeks and if I see anythging with trash I'll be all over it. Otherwise, a nice 28" class buck would be very acceptable.

Now that I know that Gator has spoken to the weather Gods, I'm just gonna wait for the snow and rut and wait for the big 'un!

Thanks,

Don Martin

I don't want to hijack the thread but I have a late archery tag for the same area (Dec 11 thru the end of the month). Since I live in Washington scouting is out of the question. Any advice, help, I could get would be greatly appreciated
