My brother and I drew out for Area 6 (early) Mule Deer tags. We are planning a 10 day hunt and would appreciate any information that anyone might have on the hunting unit. PM's are welcome if you prefer.

We are planning a scouting trip, but considering the size of the unit(s), a 3 to 4 day scouting trip is going to be a bit like going *** on a forest fire. There is way too much country to cover.

Anyone information will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

I hunted the muzzloader season a few years back. On your scouting trip make sure you are glassing at first light because they will be heading to bed down in the first fifteen minutes. The year I drew my tag I saw a lot of nice bucks every day just hard to stalk in for a close shot. My buddy drew the same tag you have and had a tough time.
Its the same old story, get away from the roads and be where you need to be at first light to glass. The public access in the Bull Run Mtns. is a good place. The top portion of the road is steep and narrow so 4x4 or walk is the way to go. Also Columbia basin has big bucks. Also Jack Creek Summit twards the north holds a lot of bucks. I didnt see any 30" bucks but a lot of 25-28 inch bucks. There was a taxidermist in Elko. I think his business was called north slope taxidermy. He is a hunter also and might get you pointed in the right direction. One other thought. Nevada just put out a new wildlife record book. It could be of some use. Adam

Thanks for the information. We are really excited about our hunt and appreciate the information you have provided.

last year i saw a 30 incher near adobe summit when i was chukar hunting. it was after deer season though. also a brushfire started in 6 sunday and so far has burned about 45,000 acres as of today hopefully their is still some country left to hunt. good luck!

1250.00 dollars to scout for you in Area 6? Are there really people that stupid that will pay someone that amount of money to mark up some maps? I got to get in on this gig. 1000.00 dollars, I'll do it for you. Killer deal.

Pretty soon these outfits will start demanding welfare tags like the outfitters do.

Help us and save us from the marketeers that are bringing hunting to its knees and running out the average Joe.

Jim, I agree with you. I couldn't believe the prices these guys charge to scout. The idea is good, but the cost is ridiculous.

I would be very curious to know that as well. Does anyone know where the fire is located at?

the big fire named suzie started near carlin and now it has almost reached elko. last night you could see the flames from town. they were getting a little close for comfort. i'm not sure exactly how far north it's gone.

almost any area is good.just don't shoot the first "good" buck you see, cause there will be better. low areas can produce some good bucks, just not a lot of them. i also drew 6 early. heading for my top secret spot. good luck

Yep...everyone has a secret little 'honey hole' in area 6. I have about 30 of them. I just wish I got the late hunt instead. But why am I complaining? At least I drew...no?

BigFly - Nice bucks. You certainly do well in Area 6. As a nonresident, I don't get to hunt it as much as you do. It's always fun looking at bucks killed in the unit that you have a tag for. We were fortunate enough to hunt Area 6 two years ago. It was a tough hunt, but we did pull a couple of 4 points out of there. Here is mine.

Very nice buck baldo. That is very typical of the deer we have seen in this area. I have hunted 6 for probably the last 25 years or so. I fell in love with it the first time I went when I was just a boy. Keep looking and you'll find your monster. By the looks of the frost on your hands, I bet you were happy to open that guy up and get em warm. Good luck on your hunt.

It's funny you say that. It was a very cold day, which is always a good thing when you are mule deer hunting. BigFly, I sent you a PM.

Thanks for the posts.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-29-06 AT 10:27PM (MST)[p]Good luck~! I don't have any honey holes there but there are some good bucks...

My grandparents hunted area 6 & 7 back in the 30s - 60s when they lived in Carlin prior to moving to Reno...he took a lot of good bucks. Although, he griped about it going downhill in the 80s before he passed on in the 90s. Nonetheless, he still made it out there 'til a few years b4 he died. My aunt has most of the pictures but I think I'll hold out for a while and roll them into some home-brewed footage.

Those mountains in the background look very familiar. I used to live down the road from them. Nice pic. fatrooster.
