Well if I am right my wife drew a unit 45-1 deer tag I know that this hunt will not have the same dates as in the past but it should still be a good hunt and runs up to Nov 5 So the bucks will start to be in the rut

What I would like to know is has anyone hunted there and if so could you share any info

Thanks

Congrats to the Mrs... Clint!!!

Sorry, I've never been out there, waiting for the California Ram tag to come my way.....for that unit.

Have fun and be safe!

Pleasedear

LOL you dont need any more tags this year you are going to be a crazy man come this fall going from state to state looking for trophys

By the way congrads on giving the smoke up I dont think the big game animals you will be hunting will have a chance now not that they did before

Congrats to your wife to on her draw. All I have to say is, get out and learn the unit. There is tons and tons of private land. Had two buddies draw the late tag that they offered last year. The snow hadn't really flown in the high country up that way yet, so the big big bucks hadn't moved in yet. We seen one 34 incher killed, they pasted on a 33 inch 3x3, and got a 29 4x4 and a 25 inch 4x5. But get out and learn the unit, and you should have some sucess.

I hunted the oct. season last year. I believe there is only one season this year. There were four of us who drew and all shot good bucks. We ended up spending a good two weeks there and finally got familiar with the land. I would difinetly consentrate my time at the end of the season. If you have any other questions feel free to PM.

we hunted two hunts last year in that unit. my 12yr old son had the early hunt, and a buddy had the late. I have also smoke poled it 3 times, the biggest 181 gross. Last year we didnt find as many of the super bucks as I have seen years past.1994,01,and 03. We saw 1 nice 3x3,30in on the early but he gave us the slip, he scored on a 5x4 26in. great first buck. on the late we finaly found the toad 4x4 33 to 34 with the deepest forks I've ever seen, it got dark on us so we had to back out and was right there first thing the next morning, but he and his 20 does were no where to be found. pm me I can give you some ideas . the units cut in half now so some of the spots are out. Scott

Well went out to the unit friday night and after one hell of a ride down a dirt and rocky road that resulted in 2 side airbags to blow in the 2005 nissan truck we was driving I came to the conclusion that unit 45 has a few res deer but most migrate from the northern mountains into the lower hills of unit 45

Is that the case or did I just not look close enuff as we seen a few deer and a couple bucks but not what I expected to see and the best buck was a going to be a 26" 3 point

Also it looked like there was a lot of public area to hunt but most of the lower propertys where private

I will give anyone a clue to where not to go in unit 45 and that is the road to and from the city or rocks DAM!!!!!!! that road sucks

Thanks

I've been on some rough damn roads but you need to slow it up a bit if you are setting off airbags.........

So true,, Sad truth is that we was going slow and the airbags where just a strange fluke we do not know why they went off as they did so as we was sitting still but boy did it piss me off bad

Now to think of it with the side airbags down maybe that is why we did not see much LOL'

if you was in the city of rocks, your to far east. This year the rifle tag is west of the Bliss, Hill City rd. Only muzzle loaders can hunt the east side of the unit. Find Dempsey meadows on a map and draw a line to King hill (the town). try a couple miles each side of that line. The roads are no better even worse in some places.

Hello clint and congrats on the tag i am two rivers brother, and was with him when he hunted in 05 and have been a couple times shed hunting. One my biggest regrets in life was not putting in with shane when he wanted me too. Unit has some huge bucks, but you just got to go out and learn the unit, put alot of glassing time in, and be in the right place the right time, this unit just has a few more right places to be then a normal unit. I wont be able to go hunting with my dad, or shane this unit, cause i am in iraq. I might be back but i am expecting my first baby in november and the wife said no hunting this year, its either hunting or my marriage lol, which do i pick

Huntnfever

Tell your dad and Brother I would like to hook up with them for a day on the hunt and maybe before

I have talked with quite a few others that have had the tag in past years funny thing is most are from Washington

I have scouted out a area that holds some deer around deer heaven mountains I think the biggest thing about the unit is that you need to get away from trails and roads and look into the pockets if you are a local you might know of a area called castle rock its in the deer heaven mountains and over looks the flats to the north I think that will be a area I will be at most

Anyway would like to meet up with you all if it can be worked out tell your dad Congrads and GOOD LUCK

O and ya pick the marriage your day to hunt the unit is comming and it may be hard to find a BIG muley but its a lot harder finding a good wife and family

P.S Have your Bro send me a photo of his buck he shot

My grandpa also has this tag, and i was glad to read a few good things about it. He's in his 70's and has a bum leg but we're gonna give it the best shot we can. I was just curious what the country is like, big canyons, rolling sage brush, or timber?? I live in wisconsin right now but i will be back in oregon in august. i'm so excited about this tag that i want all the info i can get because i can't see it for myself right now. we're gonna hit the scouting hard when i get back but i would love to have an idea where to start, any info would be awesome in a post or a PM, thanks.

125nontypicalforky

It is a lot of rocks sage rolling hills with no trees every canyon has water in the bottoms you can call me if you wish but also look into the hunting videos called lowland muleys there is 4 of them and a lot of the hunts are in this unit

Unit 45 also has a City of Rocks. It is on the Eastern side of the unit, just west of Highway 46. For all of you rifle hunters on hunt 45-1, you can't hunt this area so you shouldn't even bother scouting it. Your hunt is on the west side of the Hill City / Bliss road.

125nontypicalforky, here are a few pictures of various places in the unit. Enjoy. This 1st picture is actually one of my favorite spots in the whole unit, seriously!!

Shelbys

You ROCK!

Thanks for the photos kinda fun looking at them and thinking of the deer elk and antelope that call that place home

Also, these bucks in here have learned to be real sneaky and they are hard as heck to spot. They blend in extremely well with the sage brush. Some of you may have seen these last year when I posted them, but what the heck, here they are again.

The same buck is in both pictures. We watched him walk into this spot and bed down. Can you see him???

So Shelbys

When are you going to take me out there and show me the area LOL looks like you know the area very well

In reality what is a shooter buck in this unit I am thinking a 180+ buck would be a first day shooter I know in years past that the unit was better and that the late hunt was a key to some great bucks but I am shure that is why there not many (SMOKER) Bucks out there this should help having only 65 draw tags and no late season maybe the BIG boys will start showing up again as we know with age some of those 160 170 class bucks will get into the 190s even the 200" mark again

Anyway THANKS for the photos

P.S where is the deer anyway

Clynt,

Unfortunately I don't think the F&G did the right thing with unit 45 this season. I've always felt the biggest bucks were most visible the 10 days between the 2 season (Nov. 1-9), as the rut really seemed to be going full swing at that time. 2-3 days into the "late" hunt, the big bucks start disappearing. I think by extending the season until Nov. 5 that success rates for this hunt will be as good, if not better, than the previous "late" hunt. In addition to the 65 rifle tags, there are 15 early muzzleloader tags west of the Bliss-Hill City Road, and 125 muzzleloader tags east of the road that go through Nov. 5. I see just as many, if not more bucks being killed in unit 45 this fall.

A big reason the bigger bucks have been disappearing the past couple of years is the harvest of bucks during the month of December by the Indians. That's a whole other discussion, but you can't give out 175 tags for rutting bucks, 700 tags for does the last 2 weeks of November, then let the Indians shoot up to 3 bucks each in there during the month of December and expect the population of monster bucks to maintain or grow. Not to mention you can get an ATV just about anywhere on the mountain, when just 4 years ago you had to hike into most of the nasty canyons.

All this being said, there will still be "smoker" bucks shot down there this year, they just aren't behind every rock like they were 6-8 years ago. Here's a few recent pictures to keep you going until October...

You'll have a blast. I'd suggest waiting for the last 10-12 days and hit the pockets where the ATV's can't get to. You'll find a good buck. I think you're right on with your goal of 180 inches. If you hunt hard, you should have a chance at a 180 class buck.

Good luck!
Corey

corey,

I was lookin at your pictures and it looks to me like one of the bucks is the same as the buck killed in the story "hunting skyline". just wondering if that is correct? awesome pics thanks.

The buck facing photo in lava is indeed the skyline buck, Corey great photos, get's ya pumped!!! Went out today scouting for elk the big desert hunt opens in two weeks not sure If want another velvet bull.

Cody,

Yes, there are 2 pictures of "Skyline" that were taken the weekend before the hunt opened in 2004. The footage from scouting and Mike Reid's super tag hunt that fall can be seen on Lowland Mulies 4. Here's a couple more pictures of Mike and his great buck!

I drew the early muzzleloader in 45-1 and spent last weekend over there. Packed and glassed quite a bit without much success although it was very hot. Did see a few decent deer in the private land. Send me a PM if you'd like.

Brian

Sorry did not see your post I have been up there only a couple more times I have just got to know the roads and have only seen a handfull of deer I am praying that this cooling trend will stick around as it has been way to damn hot please email me when you get a chance

I'm heading over tomorrow night and will glass Friday night and all day saturday, before heading down to Unit 54 to glass for Antelope and Deer there. We have Super Hunt tags to fill so I'm not limited to 45.

On a side note I've decided to go to Cabela's and pick up a pair of new Swaro 15x bino's to go with my Nikon Monarch 10x and Bushnell Elite 15-45x Spotter for glassing. I can't wait to see how well they work on my tripod.

Well, a quick update. We spent another day in 45, this time on the west end of the rifle portion(that is before you get into the mostly private portion. Have not seen alot of deer, mostly learning the country. Did use my new 15x Swaro's, and they are awesome. Saw two small bucks and a HUGE 400lb bear which I almost stepped on in a small brushy draw. Waiting for some cooler weather then will go back.

Brian

WOW sound like fun I am also thinking of the 15x56 for this hunt and also for a hunt later in wyoming I have a freind that has a pair and he also loves them ...

I hope to see you in Idaho its getting really close the weather here is starting to get cooler I would like to see some early snow in the next 30 days

P.S stay away from those bears there eating everything they can to get ready for winter LOL

Well we spent the opener on Sunday in 45. Didn't see alot of deer scouting before, but we saw 17 deer on Sunday, of which 16 were bucks. We saw one very nice one. Not being an expert at scoring I spent the past three days looking at other bucks in the 150 to 180" range. I figure the big one was between 170-180". About 27-28" wide, nice and tall, not too heavy, but not spindly. Saw about 5 other bucks that will be in the same range next year. Saw one other freak, that was completely missing one side, and had half his remaining side gone, but if the missing side was as wide as the remaining it would have been about 34"+. He was about 6" outside his ear, and amazingly tall. BTW, we had a good broadside shot at the buck mentioned, but it was at 350yards, and I didn't want to chance it as my tagholder is only 12 years old.

Congrads on a good day in 45 we was also in there opening day but only seen about 5 bucks and non where close to what we was looking for but we did see lots and lots of does.
We are headed back up Saterday night and will be staying tell my wife kills or the season closes I heard the deer where moving in to the area so I am praying to see a few good bucks

Thanks for the update and good luck the the 12 year old my daughter shot here first mule deer this fall in Wyoming she is 13 and it was WAY cool Thanks again and good luck
