Dont know much about this area and was wondering if the first season has as much qaulity as the third season???

What are you refering to as the first season?? The early Oct. rifle hunt, or the general season archery hunt?

Well unit 54 is a funny unit it seems. There is alot of archery pressure there. Three years ago had a friend who drew this tag. We did some pre scouting in early august. Spotted a great buck in a honey hole that we have there. He was easily 34 inch, and would have grossed over 200. We accidentally bumped him, and he left the canyon. And he never came back. Every year you seem to here of one or two decent bucks taken. There was a young girl last year that shot a 4x4 that was 34 wide, had great fronts and eye guards, but the backs kinda sucked. I got a picture of it, I'll have to see if I can posted it. Anyways, I haven't hunted the October hunt there for three years, so i'm sure the big bucks are still around, you'll just need to do alot of scouting to locate them. It is a very very large unit.

dam I put in for that unit and didn't get drawn. Lucky you, I have never hunted there so I can really help. Good luck though, I hear there are some good bucks in that zone.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-26-06 AT 03:57PM (MST)[p]here is a buck that a young lady killed on the oct rifle hunt in Unit 54...he has good main beams, and eye guards. lacks good deep forks. he was in the twin falls sportsmans warehouse, in their big buck contest. But i can't remeber for sure what he score, but i think it was like 187 or something like that. If he would have had good backs, he would have been very impressive.

I don't know whether or not you know where Hansen, Idaho is. It's where I grew up. It's in unit 54. I've hunted MANY days there, inlcuding two years ago for myself and last season playing guide for my wife and son.

It's what I think is home. I love that place. You must be the scoundrel who got the tag that I didn't draw!

All that aside, contact me and I'll tell you where I think you should start. I can give you first-hand info on much of the unit and stories from my dad and family for the rest of it.

I don't even know if anyone does guide there, but he would not have spent more hours in that unit than have I. I am not a guide, I am just a guy who loves to hunt and who is familiar with much of unit 54.

If you'd like to call me, my home number is (208) 233-4150. My office number is (208) 234-0993. My name is Grant. I live in Pocatello.

Is Hansen near the city of rocks!! I went to Burley Idaho with a girl friend to visit here uncle loved the area!!! It is pretty!! Nocalhonker

Not really. City of the Rocks is near Burley and actually in the mountains (foothills). Hansen is a farming community about 20 miles west of there (and a couple of miles north). The main access road (Rock Creek Road) into unit 54 begins in Hansen and goes into the foothills. My brothers and I used to ride our bicycles up there to fish in the little creek; as I got older the area was good for all the adventures a guy could want. I'd not hunted there for a few years until a business associate asked if I would "guide" him 3 years ago. It made me so homesick I got a tag and began scouting again. I've spent....well, nostalgia is not the point of the site. Actually, the invitation to call is open for any of you lucky dogs who drew a tag and who don't have someone to tell you "where to go".

I hunted 54 last year for a Bull Elk and saw some really good bucks in that unit. Helped a 14 year old kid kill his first buck in there while I was scouting. It was a funny thing i saw this buck from the quad and put my spotting scope on him and watched him for 30mins and saw him bed down with some does. I know sooner put my spotter away and drove up the road 300 yards and ran into a guy with his kid and grandpa. I was not going to say anything but got to talking with him about elk in the area and he pulled out his map and showed me where he saw some good bulls a couple of weeks before and then i found out his kid had the only tag between them. Then he tells me he is looking for any buck for its his sons first deer. After hearing this i told them to follow me. It was great i got to watch the whole thing. It ended up being a 5x4 that was 26 1/2 inch deer that was mid 170s buck. The kid hit him right behind the ear and i asked the kid if he was aiming there and he said no. I then told him you tell everybody you see from now on that is exactly where you were aiming(haha). The dad told me it was a bigger buck than he has ever killed. I saw at least one good 4 point every day i was there. I seen one toad mid 190s TP. Watched him for a long time. To tell you the truth i got more jacked up spotting that good buck than I did when i shot the 330 6x6 bull last year in 54. You should have a great hunt and i would hunt the last week as last year the last 3 days they whent into rut. Hunt the lower breaks down towards the valleys as this is where I saw the bigger bucks. Good Luck

Grant you better get back to work buddy!!!! Is my MM addiction catching?

How about some pointers on where to find the big bucks in green canyon!!

If you have a 54 tag and GB22 is willing to share some info with you I would listen.
