Two of us at Point Blank Calls "the old Larry D. Jones" call company have Wasatch archery tags and will be heading out on the 4th of Sept. Just like anyone else we would love to take a couple of nice bulls for promotional use as well as personal satisfaction. If you've have info you would be willing to share on the where abouts of some exceptional bulls we would love to hear from you. You can respond through this site or through ours at [email protected] and hit [email protected] to email us.

Am really looking forward to all the photo's and stories coming up from this season. Good luck hunting to everyone!!!
Prez of Point Blank.

The best advice is spend some time scouting like the rest of us poor folks and don't expect info because you work for a hunting call company.
The ones you work the hardest for are the ones that mean the most!

Wapitiwilly, Funny that we evidently share the same first name. When it comes to public land over the counter tags I'm very secretive about my hunting spots but when it comes to limited entry tags I get a lot of calls and try to help as much as I can since I know how hard they are to get. When I first drew this tag I posted but did not identify my call company and received people that were more than willing to help but I haven't had a chance to get with them. The other thing is I'm far from rich and every bull I've killed has been self guided public land. Growing up I can identify with the frustration of having rich guys coming over and paying to get on the private land which led the landowners to not let the locals on. I've also seen others asking for help on this site and lots of people responding positively. I can assure you that your frustration is pointed to the wrong person, next time I guess I'll post as just a good old boy that needs a little guidance.
Hope you have a great hunting season.

PointBlank, I live close to the wasatch and would be willing to share some updated info on where to look for some bigger bulls. P.M. if you are interested.

If I show you where there's a Pisscutter will you send me a new Call?

I love not acting my age,
Damn I love my NASCAR race,
And Hell yes I love my Truck!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-10 AT 09:26PM (MST)[p]Thanks Muzz & Dikndirt, No issues at all, it's guys like wapattiwilly that make sites like this interesting. I have a friend that develops sites and he says the best thing for a web site is controversy. Gets people going! Anyway dikndirt offered some assistance so I'll get a hold of him and try some of the members that responded before. I really like this site and the information flow between hunters on limited entry tags. I plan to be on this site much more offering what assistance I can for some places I've been lucky enough to draw myself.

Thats the way it should be. If you have or know anything about a limited entry area. Its people like that that can help make it a hunt of a lifetime instead of making stupid a$$ coments about doing the scouting yourself. Some people cant just do enough and any help is greatly appreciated and needed at times. I hope you kill a great animal man! Post up the pics when you get him.

I'll tell you one thing for sure, whether I knock one down or not it won't be from a lack of effort and we'll have a ton of fun either way. I read in a magazine recently that it's not the size of the bull that makes the hunt but the size of the hunt that makes the bull. Can't remember where I read this but there's a ton a truth behind it. If I get one I'll be sure to post of photo. I did post a photo of a bull in the New Mexico forum here of a bull I killed on the Valles Caldera the second year they did lottery tags I got struck by lighting and got one. Their making some changes there so I just posted a thread and included the photo.
I'll be in touch. Good luck this season.

Pm me and I can give you some info, As long as you share pictures of your hunt. I love that area but have never been able to hunt elk there other than cows.

justr_86 I'll grab my maps and get a hold of you. Thanks for offering some help. If I manage to get a bull I will definitely share the photo's and the story. Hope your turn comes very soon. I think I drew with 8 points or it could have been 7 I'll have to go back and check. Evidently they let out a few more tags this year but from what I've heard it should still be a very fun hunt.

I don't know how mad you guys can be at wapiti willy. Not that hes justified in what he said. I'm sure you all know how it feels to work your ass off and eat tag soup. Then some dude just comes here and has someone lead him to a bull and he kills it. Not saying that's what your going to do point blank but its pretty frustrating when I see that. I have hunted the Wasatch for six years . When it came my turn to get my limited entry tag I hunted 14 days and was unsuccessful. That's called hunting hard. Not that I couldn't have killed a bull but I don't see a point in killing a raghorn it was go big or go home. What I'm getting at is I find it hard to give out information that I have hiked and sweated so hard to earn. I mean really what hunters give up their favorite hunting areas? if we all did we would be "hunting buddys" if you get what I mean. But either way I wish you luck. There's some monsters on the Wasatch but make no mistake its not an easy unit to take a big bull on. not that thats ever easy but you get what im saying.

scopenstalk,
No offense taken, being from Oregon we have easy any elk non resident tags for archery and have tons of Californians come and us Oregonians have bitched about them for years. Looking back at my original post it came across as a little pompous which was a mistake of mine. What I find interesting is when I posted earlier in the year as a normal Joe "which I am" no one even raised an eyebrow regarding my request for help and others have posted with a similar request which no one that I've seen has had a negative comment. So it seems to me the impression that all the guys who work for a call company get to run around with money dripping out of their pockets hunting private land. Yet when the discussion of hunting calls came up recently on this site tons of people suggested Primos which is the one company that actually would fit this scenario. Just food for thought. Lastly in my defense I have eaten tag soup many times, I'll bet if you asked for help with the same tag people on this site would help you the same way their helping me and I'm always willing to share info on premium draw tags because you only get them so often and there's a limited amount unlike over the counter.

Best of luck to you, I am one of the many that have received help from others on a LE Elk Tag. I drew the Dutton this year and had very limited knowledge of the unit. Without the help of members of this forum along with ones on other sites, I would still be grasping at straws. Did I do my share of scouting along with the advise given? Heck yes but I am only a 4 hour drive away from the unit, but as you are in Oregon, that makes a world of difference (if in the West side, that is 12 hours plus each way). I will be helping a guy from Astoria out on the Dutton this year for the LE rifle hunt and hopefully pass along the favor to another hunter that has even less knowledge and access to the unit (I am originally from Clatskanie, OR (Northwest corner of the state)). You may work in the hunting industry but as near as I can tell, there are only an elite few in the business who can fly in and drop thousands on a guide and get access to private lands. I would bet that if you were in that boat, you wouldn't be spending your time on this site asking for help/advise on the unit. Your profession in the hunting industry is still a job and I bet you don't have unlimited time or budget considering you won't be down till the 6th (Sweet profession to be in none the less, but it was your choice to pursue it). You put in the time to draw the tag, just as other hunters did, it is to be expected that you would want to get the most out of your hunt and at times asking for help is the only way hunters from out of state can have an idea where to start. If people don't want to help, don't respond. I think I have 5 or 6 points for Oregon elk, it would be great to pick your brain on what the best archery draw hunts in Oregon are sometime. By the time most of us draw a tag again, with the waiting period and then the time to build points, the bulls that are there now will be long gone. Good luck on the hunt and with the call company.

Mike

Mike,
Your pretty much right on all points. Even though Larry D. Jones was very prominent in his time his brand had diminished over recent years due to him wanting to do more work with Bowhunter Magazine & TV plus more time with his kids and grand kids. To buy the company and re-brand it under Point Blank Hunting Calls plus new packaging, products, updated products and still much more to do was a big gamble and has left us pretty much penniless. But these are the things we do to try and live the dream as they say. I'm not saying all never go on private land and stuff like that but my main concern is just to bring the company back to it's former glory if you will. To date every bull I've killed has been self guided, public land on a budget and that's the honest truth.
P.S. Oregon is a tough place to draw a good tag for out of state hunters but I would be more than willing to help you as much as I can. Mt. Emily, Walla Walla, Wenaha are the big three but plan on putting in for several more years to get a crack at these. However I guess that's the price to pay for premium area's. Thanks again.

Its called helping out and thats what he was asking. Its a limited entry unit and if someone is lucky they might get to hunt it twice in a lifetime for a big bull. Its not like people are hunting it every year for a big bull. Maybe a spike. Nothing wrong with posting for some help, Hell i will do it when i draw my tag. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. There is enough pecker heads we deal with, we dont need it here. Were all here for the same reason.
