These are some pictures that my son took yesterday. The picture quality isn't great but the subject made the shot worthwhile. Hopefully, we'll see this guy during bow season. We'll try to get more pictures as the summer progresses. There are a few nice bucks left in Oregon.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Wow...that was fun!"

'cguy'...that is a very nice buck...i visited your 'site', and you have some really great deer there. thanks for sharin'em with the rest of us.

CameraGuy,

Those are some great pics. You have some awesome bucks on your website. I really like that black buck. If he had just a little more for main beams he would be a monster. But the color of the buck alone makes him a trophy.

Thanks for sharing,
IB

Thats a great looking buck! I hope you guys can get an arrow in him.

Yep good old Babe. How far were you away from Frenchglen when you took that pic 1 or 2 miles if that. That Buck has been featured in MDF magazine last year. He was a 217"+ buck yeah I know him well I had him opening day of archery season myself at 18 yards just something about killing a buck that is not that afraid of humans. I think I have like 75-100 pictures of him during last years rut. You stick him with a bow awesome congrats you will have a great trophy, But in my opinion he is a no shooter. He was born in the barn on the refuge there ouside of Frenchglen and lives in the refuge he may venture off we had him during the Juniper Muzzleloader hunt last year and the client passed on him he said something about why is he not afraid of me and I told him the truth. Babe will be a 220"+ buck this year and whoever kills him will have a great story of how hard they worked yada yada yada. When all he is is the pet of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and has been watched growing up into the incredible buck he is.
What I figuire will happen is someone will take gut shoot him and he will die a miserable death in the Refuge or someone will paoch him this year. But yeah who ever kills him will never see any praise from me for him he is a pet pure and simple. Josh's Pet and the folks of frenchglens pet. Ohh yeah he is 8 years old this year and is an awesome buck.a

Good luck during archery season you will really need it with a pet

Dave

Oh yes.

The truth comes out. I like it when that happens on this site. Thanks for the info High Desert.

Dave lets see some pics???? It would be nice to see more, lets hope Babes Genes are out there in full effect!!!! Oh and if I saw him of the refuge BOOM }> !!!!!!! No kidding I have never heard of this deer I don't care if he came up and ate my snickers as soon as he got a safe distance away BOOM!!!!! What a trophy!!!! LOL

Josh, I was just wondering your responce to this. no big deal that he is a refuge pet, still great pics and I like the other one's also. Thanks for shareing even though pet or no pet great pic's!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a raffle tag for Oregon last year and passed on this buck for the same reasons. I had second thoughts and it was a bit of a tough decision, but as I think back on it, I would have regretted it if I had shot the buck.

I got a MUCH smaller deer with the best tag I will probably ever draw, but I am not sorry at all to see this buck alive and well in the pics. I hope he gets through another year. It will be tough since he is so tame.

I won't fault anybody who shoots him as long as it was done legally----I just hope the story is true when it happens.

Thanks for posting the pictures. He is certainly beautiful to view!!!

If that's the case I could see it if he was in a legal shooting area and the hunter had no idea about the deer. other than that anyone who would shoot him would love a high fence hunt, or maybe a hunt at the zoo. I'm one of the B&C/P&Y measurers living not that far from the Refuge so I hope I don't see him and if I do I wont score him legal or not. it surprises me a buck like that people know about hasn't been poached by now, seems that's always the way it goes. you guys should get some good hard horn pictures of him so if he gets poached even if he turns up in another state to be scored he might be identified, if he gets that big of course. to sell a trophy for the big bucks it has to has to be entered or at least qualified to be entered in the book, to a legal buyer anyway and B&C catches those things more than you might think if everone does thier job right and with a little luck .

Ok Ok OK so we want a nice hard horn photo of Babe well here he comes.

But before I post it Shane I want to say you are one of the most ethical hunters I have ever heard of and my hat is off to you. Passing on Babe is a huge huge compliment. I talked to a few people who are major mule deer nuts down in Fnaws/Mdf and they were the same opinion I am of this deer.. He is a Freaking pet. 99% of the people over there know that deer and the only reason to hunt for him is the person knows he is there so anyone who kills him knows what he is. But my final opinion is that if anyone kills this buck they would brag about killing a 400 bull in the pen using a feed bucket. Period end of story. I work with the governors tags and they all passed him last year same reason they are ethical. But without any further ranting Babe 2006 Hard Horn.

But, everyone knows there are no quality deer in Oregon... Amazing, that this buck has it's own fan club.

Stop Global Whining

Nelly

Curtis have you been chasing bucks with the tribal members there out of Chi town. They are getting ready to crackdown on the WHiteboys running with tribal members hunting. It will be intersting to see what happens. Horrible to see what the tribe has done to the deer up there. And yeah curtis I have a pretty good Idea who you are also I grew up in Klamath for 32 years.

But in all seriousness this buck is phenomenal and an incredible animal. It is just a question of Ethics is the best way to put it about him either a hunter has the ethics to say he is not completely tame but as close to being tame as a person can get.

It was awesome Last year we were coming in from the North end of the juniper hunt and standing there at the Frenchglen Mercantile on the steps getting out of the snow was Babe. No lie he was standing under the eve using it as a windbrake. LOL it was funny as hell I pullled up to within 20 feet of that deer and he just looked at me. It is amazing how small they really are and how large there horns are. Wonder if I would have walked up with an apple if he would have ate it out of my hand. I know exactly where this buck was born. He was born behind the barn on the refuge and has always lived there. From there when he gets pressured he goes and Lays down in the Barn. Sleeps in the Barn with the horses and comes out at night or he will eat with the horses. He goes up to Josh's place and eats the alfalfa stack when he wants dessert. Lets just say I know alot about this deer and he is a neat and awesome animal I think everyone is afraid to poach him because he has been photographed so much and has recieved so much attention. If someone does they will never hunt again probabally.

But this buck will be so persued this year. With everyone wanting to Kill him my ultimate plan as of now is on the 24th of august to go put him on the run and send him packing to the refuge now after I get done with the Hart Mtn. Archery tag. Protect the unprotected and stupid as I say.

there are quality bucks to be found in oregon. Where they are is the question? The few of us that have found them will not tell the general public. I actually feel very sorry for this buck now because his piture and location has been posted on the internet. There are plenty of unethical people out there that will have that refuge surrounded on opening day of season ready to stick him, shoot him or even poach him. Highdesert you better get out there early and start chasing him, or he will end up in Eastmans, Monstermulys or Trophyhunter and the BS will start to flie!

I have many pictures of Babe also. I have never said where he was located. In fact, I haven't said where any of the bucks that I have pictures of are located. I know the people at the French Glen Motel and the people at the resort. I would never shoot Babe because I realize he is a pet of the community. I enjoy taking pictures of deer all over Oregon. The buck in the pictures I posted this week was 150 - 200 miles away from where Babe lives. If he is related to Babe, that would be some migration. Babe's coloring is completely different than this buck. If you look at the pictures of Babe, he is very dark in coloration, his face is almost black. This new buck we found is very light colored. And no, I'm not telling anyone where this buck is but it is not in Harney County. There are other bucks as large as Babe, if not larger, in Oregon. I have gone out to the refuge this spring looking for Babe to photograph but haven't been lucky enough to find him yet this year so no pictures of him in velvet yet. On my web site, I have several pictures of Babe that were taken in Dec. of 2005. Here are 2 pictures of Babe and another one of this new buck we have found. Thanks for telling everyone where Babe and the bucks with him are located.

Wow great looking bucks, but looks to me like three different bucks. The first buck posted doesn't like anything like either pic of "Babe". Any the first pic of "Babe" going away doesn't look like CameraGuys pics of "Babe". I maybe wrong, wouldn't be the first time, but looks like three different bucks to me. Just my .02

LAST EDITED ON Jul-02-06 AT 11:14PM (MST)[p]You guys are amazing you have all had this buck in your sights at one time or another it seems. I am the one who took the pictures of him and i can assure you all he is several hundred miles from any refuge. But it cant be possible for there to be two large bucks in Oregon.. maybe we shoved him into the back of a van and drove him away from the refuge so we could kill him...I have been aware of this buck for 3 years now and could not get a picture of him last year but saw him several times. he is by no meens a "pet". Maybe before you guys spout off about how unethical it would be to hunt him you should go to french glen and get a picture of babe so you know what you are talking about before you start bad mouthing anyone elses hunting ethics. Surely one of you has a picture of Babe from this year lets see it because my pictures are not of your pet deer

I think there may be some mistaken identity. The buck that I passed on last year was not the one you have pictured as "Babe." He was; however, very similar to the buck in the original post. It looks like we may actually be talking about 3 different bucks!!!! Either way, the buck I passed was quite similar to the buck you posted first. In retrospect, he may not have been as heavy up to his forks, but he was very close to the area we have been talking about and was very tame---since it was a raffle tag, it was also the rut and that could have contributed.

In either case, I support fair chase, as I know the vast majority of the people on this site do. I don't live in the area, but I hope that those of you who do keep an eye on the "tame" bucks as I would hate to see them "disappear."

There are definitely still some big bucks in Oregon, but man, are they hard to find. Even in the rut, they can be near impossible to locate---especially on public land.

More power to you if you find bucks like this one in some bad times for Oregon deer!!

I wanted to take a minute to recognize and thank the above hunters who in the name of fair chase didn't take the "tame" buck. I think that sometimes in the chase of 200 inchers the real meaning of hunting gets lost. I hope that the buck doesn't end up poached or taken when it is not fair chase. Oregon does have good genetics, the problem is over hunting and predators. This buck has been allowed to reach its potential. Thanks for the pictures and story of these bucks.

I've never seen any of these bucks before but they're all nice, but it would be nice to know for sure which one is the refuge buck incase he is poached for the reasons I stated before. for all you nonres hunters from some of the post here you might get the idea deer like these can be found in Oregon if you have some luck, maybe if you have the kind of luck that wins you the lottery every week or two. sure there's a few out there mostly on private land but don't get your hopes up for a trophy, just an ok buck is hard to find. to anyone who says they take 170+ bucks in Oregon more than once in a very blue moon let's see some pictures and I don't mean old black and whites. I like the guys who wont show you a picture because you might figure out they're spot, yeah.. what ever. deer hunting in Oregon sucks,it may sound negative but when I put in for tags in your state I'd rather know the truth.

this thread reminds of when a chicken in a coop has some blood on it and all the other hens jump on it and start pecking.....unbelievable.

I'm not sure what you mean. there seems to be some question as to which buck is the refuge pet buck and if a real hunter would shoot him if he's tame.
nobody's fighting. maybe Mr. Rogers Neighborhood might be more what you're looking for.

This thread had a lot of potential when it first started. I wanted to read more, and was surpised to see this thread hi-jacked with insults about the author's ethics and credibility. Looks to me like an apology is in order, unless someone can prove that the initial picture is indeed "Babe."

let me spell it out for you huntindude---this is a classic case of someone showing a picture and then getting railed on for doing so and it happens all the friggin time. Someone thinks they "know" something or "see" something in about/in the picture and just chime in with their assumptions which has a snowball effect (chicken example). The next thing you know people are accusing the guy of poaching when all he did is show everyone who hasn't seen the buck a picture of it.

If I were to draw a tag for whatever unit "Babe" is in and saw him out at 200 yards how would I know he was a friggin pet and to not shoot him? Furhermore, do you know what ODW's policies (which are deemed as ethical) are on taming wild game?

This post has been embarassing. I can't believe how a few guys can try to humilliate another hunter for contributing a picture of a nice buck for our viewing pleasure. That is the main reason I have never posted a pic on the site and probably never will. It seems like there is as much negative remarks about each photo as there is positive. I am not an ultra-sensitive guy, but if someone disgraced my hunting photos (which I am very proud of)publically, I would feel a little hurt and wouldn't contribute in the future. I can understand if there is illegal activity on a photo and it needs to be addressed....but to jump the gun and accuse a man for wanting to shoot a tame deer because he posts a pic of a buck that "looks" like a tame buck some of the "whiners" spend their time watching?
That buck is going to look great hard-horned! Thanks for the post.

Hey HEy Hey. Number 1 I am not trying to insult anyone about that buck you look at the frame and the double Kickers. I will get more pics of the Big DOuble Kicker buck. The Buck that I have shown was called babe by Josh. He is the one who named him. If that buck is not big double kicker buck that I have shown a hard horn picture of then I am wrong and for that I am sorry. I was making a simple statement that for individuals who are hunting and would have the opportunity at either one of these 2 bucks as the buck that Camera and I both put up as Babe are both Refuge bucks.

My point was if someone is to shoot babe I think it is unethical. I voiced my opinion on the entire subject matter of killing a buck that may wonder off the refuge who lives virtually in the small town of Frenchglen. I never said Camera was unethical just blew my mind when I saw the double kickers with splits on them just eerie looking to me.

Camera you have some great photo's and I am not saying you are unethical. I am just saying that is someone knows that either one of these 2 large refuge bucks is off the refuge and they were to harvest either of these great animals. I do not consider it a feat. IF that buck you got up on the first set of pics is not that big double kicker buck. Damn put an arrow in him as fast as you can come August 26th. That is gonna be a great big ole buck.

So I am not out here trying to sling crap on camera nad call him anything I was saying it sure looked like that buck that I spent alot of time with last year. And that shane has the ethics enough to pass on a refuge buck to where he harvested a fairchase animal. As did my client who had the Juniper Muzzleloader tag, along with a few other the others. Finally what I voiced was simply what my opinion would be of the person who harvested him just off the refuge.

Dave

Dave,
I guess some of us need sensitivity training, I didn't pick up on any insults from anyone. nice pictures camera guy and I hope the pet buck makes it another year.

'cameraguy', i'm gonna say it all again...that is a very nice buck, and thank you for posting the pictures...i apologize for all the crap you had to put up with from all these that 'so well' knew this buck. keep up the good work, and again, nice pics in your 'site'...

Dave NO, I don't run with the Chi town boys (hunting or anything else). Yeah SOME people sure did do a number on the bucks north of here. I'm sure you have been into Karchers harware up there in Chi town? Man those are some monsters!!!!!!!! I heard (through the rumor mill) that the guy who owens the place is married to an indian gal. Don't know if this is true but the are some hogs and most were taken from this area. You don't see to many bucks like that around here aqny more. Last year I found three decent bucks (one should score in 170-180's) and imagen this they are near Chi town in this 20 acer patch of trees that evrey one just heads right on past. Since I didn't draw this year I might bow hunt up in this spot but, I might be moven in a couple months so will see.But best of luck to ya this year. Hope you get babe out of there if you can keep pushing him a couple hundered miles my way;-)!!

Ricochet here.
I just stopped by Cameraguy's place and he tells me he posted a photo of a central Oregon buck and gets accused of wanting to kill Babe, the Frenchglen pet. Since I'm currently camped at Fish Lake and have seen Babe for the last three days, I can assure you all that the buck originally posted by CG is NOT Babe. Actually none of the photos posted by CG are Babe although he has some great shots of Babe's buddy. The photo posted by HighDesert is Babe, I know because I took that photo. Here are some Babe shots fresh off the Nikon. He's still got some growing to do, but the trademark cheaters are starting to grow. Josh has seen the photos and verifies that it is Babe, in case anyone wants to argue about it. I took these photos across the street from the Frenchglen Hotel on July 3. After all is said and done, I think Cameraguy's buck will be better than Babe, and he's nobody's pet.

Its funny, when the pics of "babe" were posted halfway into this thread it was obvious that it was not the same deer that was originally posted. I hope CameraGuy continues to post pics here. They are some great shots!

Babe sure has a unique dark mask. You don't need to be doing any justifying or explaining which bucks you are or are not shooting with a camera or a weapon- thanks for the pics!

Great flicks. Hey Camera Guy, if you really want to see fur fly and accusations made, post some pics of a huge muley you shot! Anyone who knows deer, knows those deer do not carry anywhere near the same type of frame. Hang in there and keep posting those big muley flicks.

Some people on this site never cease to amaze me.

Camera Guy,

Please keep the pic's coming. That buck you posted is what dreams are made of. Thanks!!!!
