I was lucky enough to draw a wyoming area 7 elk tag. Then I also drew the Deer creek HMA for archery. The results were just posted last week for the HMA. Looks like the rules say you can't scout before it opens on the 15th of Septmber. I know the southeast corner is surounded by the Wagonhound ranch and was going to use that as a jumping off point.I've been trying to get a hold of the G&F but no luck so far. I know they are busy and will keep trying. If anyone on here has ever hunted the Deer Creek HMA or has any info. that they wouldn't mind sharing I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

sorry i cant help, i had the unit 7 tag 2 yrs ago, but didn't draw the deer creek HMA.
we hunted public land and for the life of me i cannot understand why guys complain about all the elk being on private ground. we seen plenty on public ground to keep us happy.

good luck and i hope you whack a dandy!

Had this tag in 08' and didn't draw any HMA's but call the landowner list and got on some land that is part of the Deer Creek HMA. Had to stay on their land but that was Ok. I got into so many Elk it wasn't even funny. Don't know what info I could give you except that I entered the Unit on Box Elder Road. Hunted on the Grant Family ranches. Don't remember the name of her ranch sorry. I shot my bull with my bow on the 29th of September and I had the hole place to my self. From what she told me she had sold 60 trespass slips from Sept 1st tell I got there on the 27th. All, or most guys didn't fair that well and all I can guess is they didn't leave the roads. You'll have to get off the road and you'll find good bulls and lots of elk. As for the 15th rule, that is an October 15th rifle opener. But you can go up and try with your bow from Sept 1-30 and you'll have a better experience with the rut and all. The 15th from what I've herd is hard because they quite down and start moving around. Also I was told by the ranchers that weather can kill a Rifle hunt in a hurry. That region gets lots of weather and snow usually comes in 2-3 ft storms. What this does is shuts all the roads down. It's hard to get deep down the Box Elder rd in deep snow. Just what she told me, but of course that wouldn't stop me and I'm sure it won't stop you. Good Luck.

We share a similar tag though I didn't get lucky with the Deer Creek permission slip. Best of luck to you. Check your PMs.

When the landonwers tell you that the road gets bad when it snows they are not joking and are for sure not telling you this to discourage you. Its the truth if any of you have spent the winter in Wyoming or in that part of the country you will know in two weeks what they are talking about. As for that permit I have not heard anything about the elk there. Just deer. That unit has the biggest pop in the state and I am most certain you can find a good bull in that area. It seems to me that you have a good game plan already stick with and and WATCH YOUR WIND(they are really touchy about that. These elk will get a wiff and they are out to the next two ridges. Hunt hard and you will see what it reaps in that unit. I have hunted as a resident and had to pass up alot of bulls. It was a great hunt, I had fun and learned something new. My advice is to just be ready to kill. The elk in this unit talk year round yes it is hard to believe but they do cows, calfs, bulls. Its when you get into the magic time is when they are bugling every second. You will have fun I hope you will in the HMA and if not talk to a rancher they will ask a trespass fee but some are good to get and some are not so good. Some charge too much for what they have. Sorry for rambling. If you have any other questions pm me. Good luck.
