Anybody hear about a huge bull taken in Colorado?

I was driving down hwy 17 towards Alamosa Sunday afternoon and saw a huge bull in the back of a red Chevy truck.
Had extras and great mass, good width, a truly big elk. Looked like the fourths split on both sides and big around as a baseball bat, and it almost looked like a split main beam on right side.
I am not good at judging big elk, but I would guess 380" plus, maybe more than 400". The truck had New Mexico plates....but the elk could have come from anywhere???

I could not get close enough to see if it was just a head strapped in or if it was a finished mount, but it looked like it had velvet hanging off it.

Now another question, would you post a pic on a public forum if you did not have a chance to talk to the truck owner for permission to post the pic?

After an unsuccesful weekend hunt it was like salt in the wound to watch that truck in front of me for 45 minutes.....

i would say post the pic, cmon man lets see some bone, i need a fix til my hunt gets here in 3 weeks !

Taken on public property then it is yours (the pic). Post it up, do what you want with it! (like show us all) If he wanted privacy - a tarp costs $9.

I was driving down the road and saw a big bull in the back on a black chevy. He was parked at an office so I drove and grabbed my brother so we could go look at a big "archery-killed" bull.

We pulled in and the guy was back in his truck, I asked his permission to look.

It was a big bull but it was a "ranch" rifle killed elk. He informed me it was a 410" bull. It was good but not that good. He must have added the 6th point along with the main beam to come up thith that score. OR JUST GUESSED.

I was disappointed that I stopped. Sorry but I don't think much of a ranch elk hunt. Maybe for good some people but not my cup of tea.

RANCH BULL!

I love not acting my age,
Damn I love my NASCAR race,
And Hell yes I love my Truck!

>RANCH BULL!

I wonder why people shoot off their mouth with unfounded assumptions that show their ignorance?

I wonder why people get excited about a Bull injected with Steroids & raised behind a tall fence?

Not saying it ain't a nice bull, just sayin....................

Well I don't know if it Ranch raised or Not But his truck sure is set up to load large animals with the lights and winch.

I don't know about farm fed either but anybody that drives around with a head on display like that is a dork.

You do know that there are 2 huge ranches by Alamosa that hunt farm raised elk don't you? With the way that truck is set up and the elk on the antenna and the funky looking antlers, I would say that those are not "unfounded assumptions" at all. I would say they are pretty accurate guesses. Be careful not to "show your ignorance on the issue.

It's always an adventure!!!

AWHOLELOTTABULL beat me to it. Plus every mature bull I've seen the last two weeks has been stripped of velvet. This is also Colorado. Also, that bull either has a lack of testosterone and desire to strip his velvet (ranch bull) or he has nothing to strip on (ranch bull). Sounds founded to me. If he really is a public land bull, then congrats to the hunter.

Whether wrong or right, I give anybody the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. This truck was coming from the Salida area headed south, like stated above it had New Mexico plates.

I guess next time I won't post the pic without expecting all kinds of accusations as to where it came from.

I would "assume" that if that was a local truck it would have Colorado plates.....I guess that shows my ignorance....

I just want to know how all you smart guys know if it's a ranch bull? Can't you guys just give someone that killed a nice bull a little credit... I know it's fun to clown on people, but thats how rumors start! I've been scouting up here a couple of mile from antonito and seen alot of bulls still packing there velvet!

Whether a ranch bull or fair chase it's a great bull! I personally won't ever hunt a ranch, but the guy might be handicapped you never know!

First of all I apologize. You're right, we shouldn't assume anything. It IS a great bull and if I saw that thing with a tag in my pocket it wouldn't take long for the lead to fly. That being said, the NM plates have nothing to do with it. I am a Utah resident and guided in Colorado for many years. I remember one time driving from the ranch to the meat packers with 4 bulls in the back of my truck. I was the only one in the truck. I can only imagine the rumors that were flying when people saw that. So yes, we shouldn't assume. But still, it's my educated guess that it's a ranch bull just by the makeup of the horns, the velvet and the location of where you saw the bull. Just my sorry oppinion though.

It's always an adventure!!!

If I had the money I,d shoot them ranch raised bulls every year and just laugh like hell at all the guys out there that put me down for doing it.

But since I dont have that kind of money , I just put in for a cow tag and hope like hell I get lucky enough to fill the freezer.

Well boys it is a public land bull just talked to the guy that guided the hunter. Will have more pics and score later today. So all u guys that thought he was a ranch bull shows how much u guys know.

Utehunter, Can you tell us what unit this bull was killed in? That thing is a good lookin brute! Lots of bone and got lots of character. Congrats to the hunter!!

This bull was confirmed killed on public land my buddy said it scores close to 430! I heard it from the horses mouth himself! I'm not going to say his name till he posts the info himself!!

Really............who would have thunk it?

LOL

I think the reason us Utahns might jump to ranch bull is that any bull that big in Utah would have been found, named, and claimed by Mossback about 3 years ago... Since it doesn't have some stupid name like "Spider" or "Banana", we assume it must have been in a barn somewhere... Though some think "Spider" may have been in a barn... LOL

It's a stud bull and I hope we confirm that it was not a ranch (High-Fence) bull... Maybe it's just a Free-Roaming ranch bull..?

Is that an outfitters truck? or a elk farmer who has a rig set up for that?

A3d, why are you so defensive at it being called a ranch bull? You saw it in the back of some dudes truck. Its not like you should have some emotional attachment to it.

Is anybody ignorant enough to think that the only reason for a winch in the back of a truck is for big game?

I know several people who don't hunt that have them. Very useful around a farm, if an atv breaks down and still has to be loaded in a truck, or when loading logs for firewood and you don't want to do all the cutting up on the mountain.
If it was a guide's truck, how many guides kill elk right next to the truck??? or even where you can get a truck to them???
Could it just be a farmers truck?

BTW: if anybody knows the driver of the truck, tell him to slow the hell down! It was all I could do to catch up to him to take the pics!

It seems like these days anybody and everybody is willing to say something against someone just because they don't know the circumstances.
We live in a country where you are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but most people would rather believe guilty until you prove you are innocent. They would rather make things up, say things that are untrue, just to make themselves feel better. I have seen what slander can do to someone and to me it is unfair.
Now, IF someone got on here and said they had talked to the shooter or guide and that it was a ranch bull, and that was backed up by someone else.........okay then, that would mean something, but people talking out their butt about something they know nothing off, slandering the shooter when they don't know what the story is........just goes against the grain for me.
Grizzmoose, I think it comes down to being fair with people and giving everybody the benefit of doubt until hearing otherwise, it is how I think people should act. It seems a lot of people involved in "trophy hunting" are quick to judge and quick to point fingers even thought they don't know the story.

But you are right....I don't know the story myself...some comments just struck me wrong.

Well congrats to the hunter. That has to be one of the biggest bulls killed in that area in 50 years. I don't mind eating a little crow every once in a while. A little salt and pepper always helps.

It's always an adventure!!!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-10 AT 04:20PM (MST)[p]Pics utehunter?
At 430" we should see him in the B&C book shortly or way high in Pope & Young book!

I love not acting my age,

I would have lost money on this bet also.... Definitely congrats to the hunter!

Forgive me for being a sour-puss. I would love to see a monster bull taken from Colorado. I'm tired of seeing all the Utards taking the glory. I really wish and hope a bowhunter wacked a 400 inch bull, and will ask for seconds while eating crow. BUT, it's been a few days now and still no pics have surfaced from the "horses mouth". I'm still doubtfull, and this post is starting to sound like the post this winter about all the 400 inch bulls killed in unit 61, and yet the only pic turned out to be a 360 from Oregon. Plus, that truck just looks too much like a truck that loads elk whole on a regular basis. Hopefully it's just an elk junkie with extra money who loves to accessorize. Anyway, I'm still screaming B.S!

Even Guide's draw tags now and then,If it was my truck I would use it for hunting too hell I got friends(regular hunters) who has the same winch setup on their truck and they only shoot small deer LOL J/K buddy.
I think if some-one said it a public bull killed by a tagholder during a hunting season, I will have to agree with them until one of you ranchbull experts prove them wrong.
Congrats to the lucky hunter.
