Oops! Killing all those deer didn't help the CWD situation

Just read where they have decided to suspend the slaughter in CWD endemic areas. Seems it didn't work to prevent the spread of the disease. Again, a rush to try SOMETHING, even if it is wrong, WHAT A WASTE!!!

I never could figure why killing the healthy animals would prevent the spread of a disease. The disease may spread, and some of the infected animals will die. We should be doing everything we can to help the healthy animals to survive, not killing them - it just doesn't make any sense. Who knows, maybe the few that survive will develope immunities that will be beneficial to the species in the future.

We could never belive the Colorado G&F was trying that. Too bad they did/do. As near as I know, Colorado still has that management in the "hot spot" CWD areas. Maybe some of the other states have given up wasteful killing. We've had CWD for 25 years and it's just like having another coyote in the area. It kills a few deer, but with decent habitat and some rain, it's no big deal. I hope the management agencies read that and do the right thing.

Some monster bucks used to inhabit the northern Front Range units. Sad to say the least. I have seen and heard secondhand some of the large bucks culled.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-09-06 AT 02:25AM (MST)[p]yes big bucks have been killed but many have died from cwd. monster bucks along the front range, there is a few, although my wife shot one last year that scored 218 n/t less than 1 mile from 'ground zero'. i also have a friend that has sheds from a buck that was pushing 190 typical last year and is doing fine so I am guessing he will score over 200 (if the area gets some darn rain) this year. Oh yes this buck lives in the same area. so there is few big ones around just like almost anywhere else.

I think some localized culling of 'hotspots' can decrease the prevelance of cwd. i am against the widespread culling, especially in low prevelance or where no cwd has been found, it is a waste.
