Got drawn for a mule deer tag in unit F and will be useing the Butte Creek Outfitters. The hunt is in the Washakie Wilderness of the Shoshone National Forest. Just checking if anybody has any info on the hunt area or the outfitter. Its my first guided hunt.

Mossback - I hope that you have done more research on your outfitter that on MM. Sounds like you have already booked the hunt. I'm not sure that this is where I would start getting references. If you have a good outfitter it should be a good area to take a quality buck. I have seen several bucks in the 170-190 class taken from there in the past few years. Good Luck and check the Outfitter references and the Wyoming Outfitter Association directory.

Yes I have done some home work but there are always some things that aren't covered. Yea the 170 to 190 bucks is what I have been told I will be seeing, Sure would be nice to see a 200 slip in but thats why they call it hunting. This is my first time for Wyoming and I'm really looking forward to it.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-19-06 AT 11:32AM (MST)[p]I just looked at their website, (http://www.buttecreekoutfitters.net/gallery.htm) they don't even have a dead on that would go 170! I'm not saying they wont or cant put you on a 190 class buck, honestly I never heard of them before.

Did they really tell you that casually, that you would be seeing 170-190 inch bucks? Did they bother telling you how many of the 185-190 class bucks you'd see?

Sounds like they have the market cornered on B/C bucks. How many do their clients have that are 190+ in the last two years? Can they send you photos of any of those 190 bucks right now, while the buck are in their bachelor herds and still in velvet? I'd ask a few more question of an outfitter that told me we be seeing 190" bucks.

They just are not that common, even in Wyoming. . . If he had said we will be seeing 150-175 class and an occasional 180-190 and MAYBE, if we're lucky a 195+ buck I'd feel better about the outfitter. Not bad mouthing them, I don't even know them but if it's your first time out, it sounds like you have your expectations set pretty high, and for good reason if they told you they were going to put you on a 190 class mule deer. . .

There is an old saying about 30" bucks "even where there are a lot of them, there aren't very many. That holds true for 190 class bucks also. This area is not noted for lots of high quaility bucks. Good luck cuz I think you are going to need it, but hopefully you run into a quality buck. Pray for snow.

You've booked a hunt with a convicted poacher. I lived in Cody when it happened so many years ago. I think it involved sheep and who knows what else. The guy spent a year in the can and lost his rights to outfit. Unfortunately his wife was able to keep their outfitters license and camp. The rumors were, that he was running things behind the scenes. Every time I've rode past his camp, I always wanted to yell out scumbag poacher. They shoot big deer up there later in the season if the weather cooperates. The Hardpan camp is a lot short ride and the one I'd pick if I was after deer. They hunt that camp into the rut and the snow isn't as bad as it can be in the Thorofare. The Thorofare season closes the third week of the season so you'd be trying to pop a migrater.

Here's a case where he was trying to get back his rights to outfit. Looks like he got nailed a few years later in 2000 for something probably to do with trapping. Too bad you didn't spend yer money somewhere else.

Too bad the Wyo outfitter board doesn't make them list any game violations or poaching convictions on their websites.

As far as knowing the guy was a convicted poacher this is the first time for me to hear of it. I'm not from the area and it would be the last thing I would think about to dig into before handing my money over for a hunt. I did book the last Hard Pan hunt and as far as getting a 190 or better deer well anything can happen on a hunt. And if I don't see a deer that is better than what I have on the wall now then so be it, I will come home dry.I really thank you for the info on the guide. Like I said it is my first and I guess I really didn't do my home work as I should have. Thats why I think Monster Muleys is great because of all the info you can get from other hunter out there. Thanks again

It just might work out for you, as long as the whole area doesn't go up in flames in the next 2 months. I was up there last weekend on the east side and I've never seen it so dry anywhere in WY in the last 20 years. But then again I don't live there. Pray that it rains soon or they may shut down the hunts altogether.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-20-06 AT 02:29PM (MST)[p]Wow, just read the case, that guy must be a few bricks short to even do anything remotley illegal! If he will break wildlife laws while under probation for wildlife crimes, I wounder what lenghs he would go to, to get his client a good buck?

O well, good luck! Take care, and pray for the best, maybe if youre lucky he'll take you into an area that's closed, it might just be where he said you'd be seing those 190 bucks! Just a bit of advice, you better just make darn sure you know the boundaries of the area you have a tag for, cause if you take a buck outside that area, even if your guide takes you there it's your responsiblity. . .

Good luck.

Here is a quote right from his advertisement in the WYOGA.org

"We are a full service outfit offering pack in wilderness hunts for ELK,DEER,SHEEP,MOOSE and BLACK BEAR. ANTELOPE and DEER hunts are available from our lodge. All rifle ELK hunts come with a 5 point BULL GUARANTEE. If you don't get a shot at a 5 point BULL or better, I refund $500.00.
July and August we provide pack-in trips with excellant fly-fishing and photography opportunities."

That GUARANTEE word is what should be a warning I would think.

Wasn't going to say anything but since the cat is out of the bag, I live in the area and have not heard anything positive about Mr. Lineberger. Hopefully your hunt is at the end of the season and you get some weather.
