I drew a tag in 71-79 in northern nevada, any spots you could tell, will hike, horse, ride, or drive. been in the jar. wilderness once. Nice area, did see some critters. Any info I would appreciate! Thanks.

highmountain, welcome to Monster Muleys. If I were to go deer hunting in area 7 I would head for the Jarbidge wilderness and I would head up the South Canyon road which is South of the town of Jarbidge. I went up this road about 4 years ago and traveled horseback up to Jarbidge lake. I didn't see any deer but the reason that I choose this route is because the road leading to the trail head is gone due to a mudslide several years back and because of overgrowth of brush. I could not find the road and had to go straight down the creek to get to where I could find the trail head. Most people will not go to this much trouble to go down the trail which means few people will hunt this area. When you do find the trail head the rest of the trail is good. Goodluck and I hope this helps. fatrooster.

Fatrooster or anyone else,

Drew 061-068 early archery never veen anywhere near it so any info would help me find a place to start.

Thanks

Thanks fatrooster, been very close to where you said last saturday, did see a few critters, again, thank you! Thank god for horses!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-08-06 AT 10:17AM (MST)[p]ddy58, you actually have an area 6 tag which holds many possibilities. If you go to Wilson Resivoir look back at the mountain range to the East which is called the Independance mountains. I've always liked the looks of this area but I've never had an area 6 tag and have therefore never hunted it. You can primitive camp at the resivoir. Or you may choose to camp at The Wildhorse Resort which has RV camping food, ice and fish bait. From the resort look to the West and you will see the Independance Mountain Range from the other side. Its all beautiful country and great deer hunting from what I've been told. I think the Wildhorse Resivoir side gets more pressure but if you get out of the truck and walk the mountain tops I think you will find big bucks. Area 6 is very big and I've only touched the tip of the iceburg. Don't forget those other mountains that are South of the Independance Mountain range. They look like desert but they hold lush meadows in the nooks and crannys which are deer magnets. I hope this helps. fatrooster.

highmountain, I agree, thank God for horses!!!! I was told yesturday that the bridge going from Jarbidge to the South Canyon Road is washed out.(This again means fewer people in the area) If that is true you might have to get to it from the Charleston Resivoir Road unless you know of a detour which is unlikely due to the steep sides on both sides of the road. Be careful on this road because the grade coming down off of the mountain leading to the South Canyon Road is very steep and if your pulling a long horse trailer you will want to gear down and use your trailer brakes. Also I do not remember a lot of turning around room for trailers on the South Canyon Road. I have a 3 horse slant with a tack room (about 16' long) and had no troubles. Also the South Canyon Road has a few campsites on it and can be used as a base camp and a good parking space for your truck and trailer. Keep in mind that when you get into the wilderness area it is a remote place and you may or may not see any other people in this area. Take all safety precautions and a water filter. Let me know if I can answer any more questions about this spot or any others. Just thinking about this area gets my blood pumping. I love the Jarbidge! fatrooster.

fatrooster, thanks again, that is great country, high in elevation but alot of fun. I just found out that I have an Idaho 45 tag also. It looks like it will be a great year!!!!

Fatrooster, I saw one nice buck, 7x5 already, hopefully he just keeps growing! Will try to keep track of him! Thanks again!

Allright highmountain, sounds like you've got a good one spotted. Good luck, I hope you get him. fatrooster.
