My son and I have drawn deer tags in Idaho unit 49 for the month of November. We are from Idaho, but have never hunted this unit before. We would appreciate any information. We have heard that the deer winter near Carey, and we are concerned with access.

Shouldn't be a problem accessing. Lots of BLM land. We have taken some bucks during the regular season just north and east of Carey. You can access on dirt road and should have plenty of bucks.

Should be able to access quite abit of land anywhere up there. Just find the area's around the farm lands. Only thing is if there is alot of snow then they will be moving south. Picabo area you will find deer. You will find good bucks down low then. East of the unit also. Near Craters of the moon. make sure you are out of the Craters park though. they have signs posted. You will do fine finding the bigger bucks. Would love to hunt with that tag.

Outdoordan - I was wondering if you knew anything about the wintering areas in the unit, or if they are further to the south. I am really hoping to get my son on a mature buck, but we're not going to have a lot of time to do it. In the Pocatello area, we are seeing more and more mature bucks near the city limits, so I'm wondering if we should stay low instead of hitting it high.

The deer will definately be moving south or east. There is plenty of sagebrush/rimrock area just to the north of carey and then continuing east for 20 or more miles. The deer head down towards the big desert area of 52 to winter. Thats not to say that there isn't bucks that remain in the foothills cause there is. Check over your maps and look at fish creek reservoir, and again the area just to the north and east of carey. You should find plenty of good hunting around the far southern part of the unit.

Thanks for your help outdoordan. Hopefully I'll have some photos for the website towards the end of November

Thanks for the information supersider. My sons first deer was a nice 4x5, shot while elk hunting in Island Park. He has hopes of something 27 inches or bigger, so we're excited about getting this tag. I thought the statistics would be better for this late tag. Seems like a lot of people draw the tag, then fail to hunt. Thanks again

I am thinking about hunting there this year. I will be hunting there or 48 this season. I have some friends that live out there, and they hunt these zones most of the the time and get good bucks.

Hey Leereddish
Make sure you save one for me. I drew the same tag this year and am pretty excited about it, but won't be able to go until several days after the opening. Good luck. Maybe we'll run into each other.

My son and I will be up there for the opening day. If it is still warm, we're going to hit it up high. I have this thing about getting up as high as I can. Any findings will be posted after the first few days in this forum. If it's cold, we will hunt outside of Carey. I have a good friend that lives in Carey, and he has volunteered to do a little scouting for me during the end of October. I will also post those findings for you as well, it you want.
