All LE Pahvant Tag Holders for 2010

I was just curious as to what everyone who had a tag this year. thought about the hunt in general, the quality of bulls, the terrain, and those of you that killed post a couple pictures of your bull. I live next to the unit and am up there regularly but I didnt see near the bulls or quality that i have seen in past years.

I AM THE ULTIMATESHEDFREAK!!!!

ya we should just keep cutting tags untill the only ones that can hunt the pavant are the ones who can afford the auction tags.

Or we should just keep cutting the tags untill all we kill off that unit is 500" bulls

cut the tags cut them all screw the younger generation of hunters!!

Well, I was new to the Pahvant experience this year. I looked over tons of bulls. Found only three that I would shoot in the first part of the hunt (All in the 370ish range). Everyone I talked to said it was a weird year and not as many huge bulls around.
Either way I would rate my hunt a 10. I had a blast, got to see some awesome country, and some big bulls. In the end I got one of the three bulls I wanted.

Scored 367

I spent a ton of time on the unit this year as well as in years past. There are still a ton of bulls on the unit but the quality is way down from what it used to be.

Just got back from the unit, I have a late season tag. I've seen a lot of bulls, but very few that are even close to shootable. I've only seen maybe 3 that I would consider over 350 and I've spent quiet a bit of time there the past month.

Way to go hjb. That is a great bull.
I know THE large conservation organization in the state will be lobbying for fewer tags. I think it is crazy.

Spent a few days down there!
Seen quite a few Bulls!
Very few Big Bulls but I think there are some down in that thick nasty crap!

SW,
Not that you will answer, but how many days did you spend on the Pahvant this year. Or any year? Just curious as you seemed to have the answer on how to manage it?

There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.

Problem is:
They may have over hunted the Trophy Bulls?
The Opportunists will SCREAM wanting to kill some of them Pisscutters off!
They just can't figure it out, them Trophy class Bulls were smaller Bulls Once Upon a Time!

I still say there are some Big Bulls shaded up on this Unit!
But here's what bothers me!
I was there right smack dab in the Rut,seen several Pisscutter Bulls acting as Herd Bulls,THAT AIN"T RIGHT!

I have been down on the unit quite abit this year and the elk were scattered all over the place. I found six bulls duing the rut that were only a mile and half from I-15 in the cedars. I found several more bulls in the gamble oak and pines at 7,000 feet. Found several more bulls at 9,000 feet. The observation I made was that I was seeing more branch antlered bulls than cows. Granted I did not see any of the supposed Pahvant monsters everyone else reports seeing.

I saw more, as B_BOP puts it "piss cutter", bulls I would estimate in the 4.5 to 6.5 age range.

HJB great bull! Had the pleasure of watching your bull a few time on our hunt. you probably got a photo on me on your trail camera of me hauling in a stand. Watched and almost got a shot at "Captain Hook" also. I personally have no complaints about the hunt we had. Saw 15 to 20 six points per day with a few we thought were better than the ones we got. We didn't have super high expectations going into the hunt. Just to go and have a fun hunt and let the arrows fall were they may.

Great bulls guys. I also have the late season tag down on the pahvant. Congrats to all those that have all ready harvested and good luck to those headed down next month. Any suggestions or advice for the late hunt would be greatly accepted.

Why would I not answer it. I always answer your questions. I spent not one day on the pahvant this year. I can tell you this though the good old days of finding a 400" bull in every canyon is over!!! The reason is and it is simple and if you cant see it then there is nothing I can say to convince you.

When you have a growing herd or a herd under objective you can do what the state did and not shoot the bulls. this allows loads of bulls correct?

You can only do this so long and then you will have to start killing elk so the herd by law is at or under objective correct?

YOU FOLLOWING ME OR HAVE I LOST YOU.

So the wild life board didnt want to kill the bulls they took so long to grow because most of them are at max points or high on the list for points just like bess. These guys said hey I waited 20 years and the state owes me a 500" piss cutter.

Well the state says by law we can only have so many elk on the unit. So what did they do? They started killing cows. Killing cows controlls the population correct?

Well you can only kill so many cows until the herd is out of balance and you are forced to kill bulls because despite what you might think bulls dont breed bulls? I know packout posted a photo to prove other wise. But bulls dont breed bulls and reproduce another bull correct?

So having a 100% success rate weapon with a 3 day average hunt in the rut will without a doubt kill the top end off any unit!!!!! its not rocket science is it?

Proper management from the start would have been bull cow ratio, and F the inches. F the spike hunt, and F the 100% hunt in the rut. You would still have had big bulls but you would have to earn them. A perfect example of what good management for opportunity and quality is ARIZONA. In Arizona you have to draw a tag to kill a bull. they give most of the tags to archers and they let them hunt in the rut. most archers never kill the big herd bulls. Sure some do but most of the larger bulls are killed by the rifle guys or they live another year. FACT they have half the elk we have and still kick out 400" bulls every year. No spike hunts!

Another FACT you cannot give over the counter spike tags and not create a void in the future bulls. You will have to cut big bull tags again thus FN up the system more.

so does that explain it or are you still confused???? I don't know how to dumb it down anymore then that.

by the way FN or F means freaking or freak!!

BESSYBOP when you finally Draw your tag just let me know what unit and I'll start a collection and we'll truck in Spider Bull Jr. I hear with all the genetics that dad left back on the farm and all the roids that he is getting pumped full of by the time you draw he should be around 700 inches.

For Hells sake just remember to pop the ear tag out before you break out the baby blue T-shirts, Mullets and the camera!!!

I only saw a few 350 inch bulls???? Are ya shitting me???

I told ya CAT that perty soon you inch obsessed freaks would be turning down bulls that wouldn't hit the magic 400.

Your are spot on.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-18-10 AT 05:44PM (MST)[p]Well,Well,Well,if it ain't ww chiming in!

700"s huh?
500"s will be small by the time I draw right?
And Yes Wiley, all the Hunters I was around this year wanted a 400" Bull!
One Lady turned down a 395" Typical Wiley, that piss you StickFlippers off or what?

I don't agree with all of sw's BS niether, but some of what he's Preachin is true, especially the F'n Spike hunts!

I agree, once you shoot the cows nearly out on a Unit you have too many Bulls,so the Brainstorms around here think we should now kill all the Bulls, what do you have left?Well take a trip over to Anthro & check it out for yourselves, there is what you have left!

PISS POOR MANAGEMENT = a LOW NUMBER PISS POOR QUALITY & QUANTITY JUNK HERD!

I still say there's a few BRUISERS left on Pahvant, but to see several PISSCUTTERS as Herd Bulls got me to thinking, somethings wrong with this pic!

Of course SW is right... How long have we been telling you this was gonna happen???

Now the people driven by $$ things $$$ other $$$ than $$$ what is in $$$ the best interest $$$$ of the $$$$ herds are going to complain that the "Quality Has Been Shot Out" of the herds and push to reduce tags even more. This will only make this cluster worse. Did I mention that Landowner and Conservation permits
May have had something to do with where you are now?$?$?$?$

Better question would be HOW MANY DEER DID YOU SEE ON THIS UNIT???

Pay attention ww!
I said he was right about the 'spike tags'!

Well ww!
How many Deer do you think I seen after 40 years of PISS POOR DEER MANAGEMENT?

"push to reduce tags even more"?

You'd best add up all the extra tags that have been added on LE Elk Units the last several years and WAKE TF UP!

Pickin up cans don't make me a $$$ man Wiley!
I don't agree with all that goes on but don't blame piss poor management on $$$ whores alone!

You opportunists wouldn't be happy if you killed the last calf in the herd!

WOW! Awesome bulls! I was wondering who put that tree stand up. Thanks for not taking my camera. Is that the famous "Chicken Claw" Bull you guys shot???
Congrats on the success, I think you guys were just about the only guys to connect down there on the archery hunt.

SW,
I agree that you could give more archery tags on all LE bull units without hurting the herd as bad as more rifle tags. Maybe we ought to make everyone start hunting with spears and rocks again? I am glad you brought up objectives numbers. Because truely in Utah right now the only thing holding down an unbelievable elk herd is our cattle ranchers. Every unit in the state could easily carry more elk yet the DWR and Wildlife Board give in to the demands of the cattle and sheepmen. Look at the Parker pronghorn herd and Fishlake elk unit. You could easliy carry 8000+ head of elk on that unit and issue 1000 archery any bull permits every year. This would give the option of leaving some units ie Pahvant as Premium units that would push for 400 inch bulls. Makes me wonder how a small number of cattlemen have more power than the sportsmen? I think it is because we are less organized and not fighting for a common agenda. Believe me they are and they hold our herds in check far more then is ever brought up!

The Pahvant, Fishlake and Monroe were all down this year. I dont think the spike hunt has effected the big bulls yet I just think they were down a little and the rut was off this year.
There are not enough deer in Utah...FOR REAL.

Bessy, here in Arizona I saw the very same thing you did with small lesser bulls with the herds and I just could not figure it out. They were acting like Billy bad a$$es too!! I was on bulls everyday hitting hard on the ground. I worked to stay with the herds as I wanted a big bull but was very disappointed with what I kept finding with the cows. I passed on 10 to 12 bulls until I finally made a plan and put it all together but my bull and others much BIGGER than he was with other smaller bulls!! My theory and it just a theory is we were not in the heat of the rut just yet. The smaller bulls were with the cows as the bigger bulls were getting geared up, pre rut if you will. Yes they were screaming their heads off but the cows weren't ready for breeding yet so the big bulls stayed in the thick nasty stuff which is eventually where I killed mine. That being said it was a very very weird year as I have hunted my unit for over 20 plus years and have never seen it like this before. On a side note, I didn't see as many broken bulls either. Mine wasn?t broke but he did have chips in the tips of his tines.

GBA!

Glad you held out & found the big boy!
Definitely a Weird year, warmer Fall than I've ever seen!
I am talking right square in the middle of the Rut though!
Seen more Busted up Bulls in one season than I ever have!
Number of big Quality Bulls versus PISSCUTTER Bulls was the worst I've seen in many years!

The OPPORTUNISTS will be screaming again, they just can't stand to see some Bulls left alive that might be shooter Bulls next year!

There's a local buzz on the Pahvant that Mossback and a female hunter took a monster bull this unit this fall. Don't know any of the details, just that this bull is big. Anyone else heard anything like this?

I also have a late tag; haven't spent much time on the unit yet. Was helping a buddy on the Beaver and we had a really tough time finding good bulls. He passed a number of small bulls, missed a good one and ate tag soup.

Strange year??

There is a post on another forum of a real nice bull that came off the Southern end. The guy that took the bull was a very successful guide and the post said he had guided like 400 successful hunts.

Anyway he took a sweet bull. Never saw the what it scored but it had to be 380 or bigger. Someone else can post a pic, I think it's on muleycrazy or soemthing.

I also know of another guy that shot a 320 6x7 on the rifle hunt. and another 350 class 5x6 was taken while I was there.

I know of 4 other bulls besides ours that were killed on the archery hunt. All 6 points or better ranging from 330-402. My neighbors buddy got HJB's "captain hook" on the rifle. It scored close to 370. Most of these bulls came out of the same area. With most of bigger bulls we saw dead now, it will be interesting to see what will replace them next year in that particular area. That's probably why we are seeing the quality fall in that particular area. I still feel that that huge bulls exist on the pahvant, they just are in a less pressured area. The biggest bull we saw was in an odd ball spot and i am sure still alive and probably will be next year.

Dblkicker
elk are a renabale rescorse what makes you think killing a every one of the 380-600" bulls on the unit this year will garantee you wont have a 380-600" bull next year?

as I see it if you kill a 8-10 year old bull there are still 9 year old bulls now that will be 8-10 year old bulls next year UNLESS YO KILL ALL THE SPIKES!!

You have got to get some pics of him to me, I'm dying to see that bull up close. I thought he would score a little better, but man I really love that bull. He was #1 on my list.

I'll send you a PM and we can get in touch. I can also send a DVD of all the video I have to your neighbor's buddy.

Thanks,
HJB

Every bull that was on my "Hit List" is now dead. Those were some of the biggest bulls on the Northern end of the unit. So we have taken a good chunk of the biggest bulls out of the herd this year. It will be interesting to see what next year holds.
I still think a managment hunt would be beneficial. Otherwise these managment bulls are going to take over and run the show.
We are taking all the "Big" genes out of the pool, and leaving the "mamangment" genes.
It's sad to say, but I think the quality is only going to get worse.

OK HJB!

Before you get all pissed at me again, tell me something?

Would it be fair to say there are too many Trophy Bulls being harvested on that Unit?

You can see it,can the DWR?

How many Big Bulls have been taken on the Pahvant Late Hunt?

No Doubt theres a few big bastards gonna survive in there but can anybody see the change?

Give the Spike hunts time to take their tole & You'll see what I'm saying!
