Kaibab Buffalo

Gentlemen,

I am aware that you all think I am totally nuts after my first post of seeing the King Toad muley on 12A East. If you don't think I am totally nuts already, I'll give you another chance.

I am considering buying a buffalo tag for the Oct 27-Nov 5 early rifle hunt in 12A East.

I would like to hear what you think about this proposition. Also, for those of you who know the area like the back of your hand and/or guide the area, where have you seen the buffalo? And, are there really any of them out there? If so, where? And how do I go about finding them? I've never hunted buffalo before and the only thing I really know about them is they taste delicious.

Now at this point you may be thinking I'm crazy. Some people might even agree with you (especially my wife). But there is something in this for you. If I do in fact kill the buffalo (or even get a chance to see one), I will have a story for all of you that will be so funny that it will make you pee your pants and roll around on the ground squeeling like a stuck pig howling with laughter. My wife has also agreed to let me take nude pictures of her on a buffalo blanket - and let me post them on MM (she just doesn't know about the posting of the pics yet, but I'm sure she will be ok with it after she finds out). How's that for a deal. You give me information, I give you a cleaning bill for your pants and carpet and a woody.

Now you may be thinking that my wife might actually look like a buffalo herself. She doesn't. She is 5'10", 135lbs, red head and has a great set of DDs (I know they are great because they cost me a fortune). You may call me a liar, but the only way to find out is for me to kill a buffalo, take the pictures of my wife and then post them. What do you have to lose - nothing!!!

I'll thank all of you in advance. Thank you.

BHD, I haven't a clue as to where the buffalo are on the Kaibab, or if there are even any there currently, but I believe Chuck Adams Killed one on the Plateau or near there a few years back. You may be able to find the article online. From what I understand, they are quite tough to find and a challenge to hunt in that area.

I don't know a thing about Buffalo on the Kaibab, but I'm more than willing to help with those photos. Just let me know if you need a light-man or anything ;-)

Hey, maybe the guys in the photgraphy section could use that as next weeks photo topic:

Week #43-Nude Pics of your wife :)

Good luck, I hear its tough to find those elusive Kaibab buffalo.

Holy crap BHD, I'm liking you more & more! You're one of the rare reasons in a long time that I have been moved to post a reply. THANKS!!! ;-)

That being said; on my son's junior hunt last year, on the second day (after he bagged his deer) we took a drive down south to have a look at the canyon. We ran into a father/son combo that had come across a big bull buffalo earlier in the day! It was in the far SW part of the unit, right along the park boundary, but outside the park. This was in early/mid November.

PM me if you want the specific forest road number!

I'm looking forward to the pics, but especially looking forward to your post-hunt story!

Only thing I know about the Kaibab buffalo, is your gonna go try and find one. That and they probably smell bad.

Hope to see the pics..........good luck.

AZG&F is the downfall of hunting in Arizona!!!!!

Kilowatt -everyone lucky enough to obtain a Kaibab deer tag through the draw is able to purchase a discounted any buffalo tag. The tag is only good for the season that the deer tag is good for. This is a way to remove some of the buffalo off the Kaibab, which seem to stay in the park. The same people can also purchase an Elk tag that works the same way.

BigHungDog, if you talk to any of the AG&F officers they will tell you that it is a tough deal. Most of them will tell you not to waste your time or money. But if you are planning to hit the Kaibab before the hunt and for the full hunt and you take a good deer early, why not take a chance at a buffalo. If you hit the roads close to the National Park during wet times you can see track most of the time. So they do come in and out of the park. But other areas do a few older bulls that on their own and they stay close to the Park boundaries in the National Forest that you can hunt. In June and July the buffalo are on the ranch down low on the east side caving. They have been doing some depredation hunts during that time, but all of the tags are yearling only tags. So if you want to take a bull, you can't harvest them that time of year. I was on this hunt this year with a friend and never got a yearling to clear the herd for a shot. We had multiple opportunities at good bulls. My son got another late west side tag this year; we will be hunting deer and leaving the buffalo alone. Tough hunt but there are buffalo around. The good thing is, if you find a bull buffalo before the hunt they don't travel much that time of year so he will probably be within ? mile of where you saw him for a few weeks.

I have seen BUffalo up there a few time but they have always been on the West side and always inside the park. As soon as you go into the park past the little gaurd shack there is a big meadow on the west side. They have been in that field

check the coxcomb area as for me if i drew a tag up there i would spend more time hunting the buff then the deer but that is because i have always wanted one. all along the boundry to the park always has buffalo coming and going. good luck and i cant wait to see those pictures of the buff and of course in the buff.

Forget about the "Pics" of a damn Bufalo,BUTT ??? Have seen these "Brutes",many times on Eastside on and around Burns on rd 219B,from Rd 610."WARNING",watch where You step,THEY do leave a PILE of ---

Anyone know what the "discounted" price for the tag would be? As a non-resident any discount off the +-$3,700 would help. Also, I don't imagine you can pick up the tag mid-way through your hunt (for obvious reasons).

OK, I have a Kaibab buffalo story that will rival your scouting exploits.

Several years ago a buddy drew 12AE late tag. I tagged along for fun and help. We were one of the last groups hunting that year as we were holding out for a monster. We befriended another group of hunters who had camped a quarter mile or so away from us. They had us over for dinner and drinks one evening. We had eaten and were sitting around the campfire waiting for one of their buddies to get back. It was getting late and everyone started to wonder. All of a sudden he pulls up, gets out of the truck with a pale, death look, and stumbles over to his tent. He had a wet spot going down his leg and a blank stare. Took a few minutes for him to gather his composure, get changed, and settle down. Turns out he went for a hike back in the Cockscombs looking for Mr. Big. Several miles back in he heres a crashing noise and looks up to see a monster bull buffalo charging dead on in his direction. Rather than put 165 grains in the brain he panics and drops his rifle. He plays ring around the rosey with Mr. Buf for what he describes as 10 minutes (Somewhere in the foray he pees his pants). As he is circling the merry go round, he breaks off a sapling. Says he reached out and poked the buf in the face from a distance and the beast finally runs off.

I swear I would never have believed the story if I hadn't seen the guys face.

Matt, if you are out there, long time no speak. Sorry to bust your nuts but it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. This is Tad from the neighboring camp.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-17-06 AT 09:44PM (MST)[p]The charge for buffalo is 25% of the full fees which for a nonresident is 937.50.
I am sure that there will be volunteer scouts for locating a buffalo. That is a good offer from BHD!

Like 257TONY stated in the post about The Big Daddy Deer.....

THIS POST IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS!!! :)

Last year when I hunted 12ae early we saw no buffalo. There were a bunch of residents trying to hunt them, but the only one I heard of killed was on the West side. We did spend an afternoon down low on the east side and did see a bunch of tracks some seemed very fresh. I asked the game manager about the tag and he told me there are no Buf on the east side and as a Non-Res don not waste your money.
If I was a Res. I would probably buy the $80 or so dollar tag just because you might geet your deer ealy and its always fun to be out hunting even if your chances are real bad.

i hate to say this the game manager lied to you, i know 8 people you have drawn that hunt in the last 4 years and all of them have killed there buffalo on the east side.even as big as they are they can still hide very well and will move 12-18 miles a day if they want to.

Actually when I went home for lunch I looked at my notes it was no elk, sorry. His advice was still to save the money and focus on the deer. Like I said we did see tracks and some looked very fresh. Sorry about the screwed up info on the first post.

You can find buffs on the early hunt on the east side. Most of the time they will be far from the roads up South canyon. They can hide in many places behind the cockscombs.South of south canyon in what is call the lighting burn is a super place to fined a lone bull.If it is dry they will water at the drinker at the head of south canyon, you have to walk or ride in on a horse or mule from the locked gate.A great place dog point but again you will have to walk a few miles or ride in.There is a burn under piegon pockets that holds buffs from time to time. Most of the buff will leave after the first gunshots on the ranch and you will be hard pressed to find them again, they will run up south canyon and on to the park.I have found them on the ranch in all these places when I am lion hunting there.See ya Mav

Can't tell you where to find one up there, but I was told at the G&F meeting in Sierra Vista that they killed 5 buffalo and only one elk on those OTC tags during the deer season last year. Sounds like long odds for the cost of an NR tag.

Those sound like pretty good odds to me. First, I figure there are 200 people with tags for the early and late hunt combined (based on this year's draw numbers). How many of them actually bought buffalo tags, maybe 20%. That means 40 people had tags and 5 buffalo were taken. That's a 12.5% hunt success. Not too bad really.

I also assumed that all the hunters and the buffalo were on the east side. If the same numbers were applied to both sides the odds would be cut in half. But to the best of my limited knowledge, most of the buffalo are on the east side.

I still think the real problem comes down to that you are also trying to kill a huge deer. The people we talked to last year that were hunting buffalo had shot small deer. If that is what you want to do go for it. I wanted a big deer, which I didn't get. If I could just go for buffalo i probably would do it in a second, but I don't think that its money well spent trying to do both. Yes, it could work. Some of the people just brought a bunch of friends along and they went looking for buffalo while the others were deer hunting. That I feel added a lot to the traffic on the Bab. But what ever trips your trigger, I found it hard not to want to look for Buf and to go follow there tracks. As I said before if I was a Res. I would spend the money but for me it was to much money as a NON res for the small chance.

Just wished I lived anywhere near the Kaibab. Would be spending lots of time searching for that buffalo. for sure. would also pm BHD for cell phone so I could call him as soon as I seen one.

Eastside, right on the north boundary line of the Saddly Mtn Wilderness. Their is a monster in the group of a half of dozen ugly suckers. Bring lots of sharp knives and many bodies of pack it out. Now, show me the money.....er..the redhead!!!!
