Busted Bull

I shot a really nice bull during the archery season a 6x5 he had the 4th point on his left side broke off. Was wondering if anyone has before and after pictures of bulls or bucks that have been fixed.I dont know if I will fix him, am leaning toward the way he was....any thoughts

Personally I hate them broke and would have them fixed if missing more than a couple of inches but that is just me. A lot of people say it adds character or leave it how you shot it but not me. Fix it how it was before the fight. But that is just me.

That is the main reason I am asking the 4th point on the right is 19 inches long so if I match them that would be pretty cool

I'd fix it. I have to laugh when people say it adds character. Reality is that if two identical bulls were standing next to each other and one had a brocken tine, almost everyone of the guys who say it adds character would shood the unbroken bull. So much for character.

why bother shooting one....just make up some plastic horns if you enjoy fake mounts....

I shot a nice bull this year also. We watched him bust his left G5 kicking the shat out of another 6X6 on the second night of my hunt. His right G5 was already missing a couple of inches. I'm having the right side fixed and leaving the left side. It's that "character" thing everyone is talking about. He is very symmetrical so it wont be hard to see what he really was.

thanks for all the comments . When I shot this bull I did not see that he was broke... even knowing I would not have passed on him. does any one have a picture of a fixed animal??

Here is my bull. When I had him mounted I was unsure of getting his brows fixed. I left him broke for a good 5 years, then there was a bit of a cluster F that ended up cracking his skull. When I was getting that repaired I had the taxi fix his brows. This wasn't that hard for the taxi as he is a good friend and actually had video of the bull the year I shot him before he broke. Sorry about the pic quality.

If you are doing a full mount get a major horn fixed. It just looks better.

If it is a european/skull mount, leave the broken horn as is, that adds character.

If it were just a couple inches here and there, I would leave the busted horns. That's what I did with my bull. He was not a huge 6 point, scores 328, maybe would have gone up a little without the breaks, but who cares, the "class" range of the bull is established. But he looks good. I will attach a picture later.

Thanks for the pictures... here is another question what if you dont know what the other side looked like do you still fix it???keep them coming, BTW thoes are very nice bulls!!!

I would think that they would be able to match it to the other side and it would look fine.

I had 2 choices to fix mine, they can cast the matching point on the opposite side or replace it with another antler. I happened to have a shed about the right size so he used the sword off that one.

here is my dads busted bull. we passed him up opening morning because he was busted. We hunted 6 more days and saw 6-8 bulls a day but nothing bigger went back into the same area and found him decided to take him he will probably be fixed.

Andyman - Obviously you don't like repairing broken antlers, but whats wrong with making the bull whole again? With my bull we knew almost exactly how big his brows were, even tilted the one out like he was before the break, I have the video to prove it. I understand the 'leave it as it was' when you shot it, I fought this for a while myself...but a 390+ 6 point vs. a 350s 5 point...I think like him better whole. I don't claim to kill a 390 bull, I claim a 350s 5 point...

I think that repairing and even adding points is okay anytime it enhances the look of the trophy, to many guys are hung up on leaving it as it looked when they killed it. I like to see a girl with breast enhancements so I don't see a problem with adding broken points or brand new ones. Also widening the skull a little if its not to obvious.

Get him fixed. He deserves to be displayed in his full glory. He grew it, not like you are adding anything new and he only broke points cuz he was the baddest bull on the mountain. Mount him as a proud bull.

I was just messing around, I would do the same thing in your case. The LE bull I shot this fall had half of a third busted off and I am leaving it as is, but I think you had a good reason to get yours fixed. Besides, it's the hunter's bull...people can do whatever they want IMO.

To each his own, but I say get him fixed. You are not doing anything fake, just getting him back to how he was before all hell broke loose during the rut! NV4Life, had a great time with your old man this weekend. I'm sure you heard about our "ordeal". We were on some huge bulls!
