Is Mex for everyone?

Over the years I have heard so much about old Mexico. 35" bucks everywhere you look. I guess that would be in the old days, but I guided down there for two years ans yeah there are some great bucks. Is it that much better or is it that much better publicised? It is more succesful to be able to hunt rutting bucks in Jan with a rifle, But is it REALLY worth the 8,000-10,000 difference anymore?

We take great bucks every year in Az, some comparable to Mexico. So here is my question "What is the overwhelming draw to go"?
Here are a few Az desert deer, all archery of course.

I'll tell you- its not for my pocketbook. If I was rich and had an extra $8,000 to spend on a deer hunt, I'd go down there. Im not rich and I dont have an extra $8,000 so I cant go down there. I think the draw is that we see the huge deer that come out of that area. We dont see the stats on how many hunters actually hunt it. I'm sure not even half of the bucks taken by the hunters are over 160"s. Thats my guess. And believe me to me thats a huge deer!! But for $8,000 your buying the OPPORTUNITY to harvest this big of a rack. There are no guarantees. I'm sure someone on this site will correct me if I'm wrong because I dont know the numbers as far as how many bucks are taken and so forth. It was an estimation. Don't bite my head off. HUNTSONORA- set me straight. Is this an accurate assessment?

Nice pics I like that cactus in the background of the last pic. The buck is a rare horn type for the desert. Way cool thanks for sharing!

The draw is the ability to hunt truly giant bucks with a rifle, during the rut, without having to draw a tag. I don't think there is any other place where you can do all of that. Not to mention the Mexican experience.

I would like to go someday, but for $8,000 the hunt takes a backseat to a lot of other hunts I would love to do, and for less money. Mountain Goat, Afican Plains game, Alaskan Moose, caribou,Siberian Ibex in Asia and even coues in Mexico. I would have to do those before I spent the money on a Mexico Mulie.

The experience of being in a rough, unforgiving, yet very beautiful land. Eating homemade Mexican food every day! Having the chance to see what most Americans consider summer-coat muleys with hard black antlers. Also anticipating that you will get to see some of those antlers in giant proportions. Helping someone attempt to harvest one of these giants, or even passing on him for the chance that there could be something bigger tomorrow. And finally, eating homemade Mexican food everyday!

For that price of $8,000 you could probably hire a cook to supply you with homemade mexican food for a year!!

"you could probably hire a cook to supply you with homemade Mexican food for a year"

True, but you wouldn't be hunting mule deer.

from the "Heartland of Wyoming"

I guess, for most, it is not just the bucks but the adventure of going back in time. I am not a pro-Mexico guy but I am not an anti-Mexico guy either. I just can't see paying that much when there are deer in a person's realm of possibility that cost much less. Oh-ya some even have homade Mexican food! But honestly say that it is not just a rich man's place?

It depends what you think rich is? A guy could save for 10 years and go down there but he is not rich. A guy that goes every year, in my opinion, is rich! I can't go once cuz I've got 4 kids, a wife, 2 car payments, a mortgage, and a boat. If I can get rid of the 2 car payments, the boat and the wife...its possible!!

Yeah but the wife would be mad you got to go but she didn't get the car! If she made Mexican food you would have to take her!

I have hunted Mexico the last three years and taken the biggist buck I will probably ever get. I had a great time every time. I killed a couple of nice coues too, one scored 111. I also hunted Nevada the last three years and will go again this year. I prefer Hunting Nevada, it has always been my favorite place to hunt. Ya I got a few dollars, enough to go anywhere I want and I want to go to Nevada! Just something about it.

Blueok is rich! Blue oak is rich! Sorry Blue Oak I dont think I would have said that here.

>Blueok is rich! Blue oak
>is rich! Sorry
>Blue Oak I dont
>think I would have said
>that here.

And he likes Mexican food.

Blueoak- I envy you! If we could swap bank accounts, I would. You're one of the lucky ones that have the money to do what they really enjoy. Congratulations......you son of a @*%&$!! Ha Ha- just kidding!

Nice pics, nice bucks. But, I'm through with Mexico. No more of my money goes to Mexico. Except of course my taxes.

Pre64- Dont get the whole illegal alien thing going. Theres nothing more frustrating than having a $750 a month health insurance payment and then go to the hospital and have to wait for all the illegal aliens that have MediCal. Its better insurance than I have and I work for a $&@*!#@ living!! How can they get approved for MediCal when THEY'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE? I feel like calling a cop and saying, "there they are officer, take them away" You know what the cop would say? " I dont want to get sued!!!!" This country has lost its mind!

Would love to do the hunt, but it takes a serious backseat to some hunts that are way in front of the whole "Mexico Experience".. Besides, I get plenty of that already.. I live in Tucson!!

Cape Buff, Leopard, Austrailian Buff, Mongolian Ibex, ect. come way before I shell out the 8K to go to Mex for a deer hunt..in the mean time, I'll continue to hunt Coues deer right here in Az every year and pretend to be in Sonora!!

I guess my real point is most everyone here has it right and hunting the public ground in their own backyard is as much or more fun than the expensive stuff. I can't wait to load up the truck and start rolling around out in the sage, glass up a nice buck and try to get on him. As for the money, I put up with a mountain of crap everyday to get it and I found out long ago I don't need it to have a great hunt. But it doesn't hurt either!

I can drive 30 min from my house and chase deer in the desert that are damn near as good as mexico deer. Anyone wanna pay me $8000 dollars??? I'll take you out!!! My wife cooks great mexican food.... and she's from Wyoming! Actually... I'll hook you up with a guide named Travis that'll charge you way less for just as good a hunt as mexico.

Donnie

Its not just the illegal thing. The theme for visiting south of the border has always been "Welcome to Mexico, lower your expectations." Money can be spent elsewhere with much more satisfaction, IMO. Try Alaska.

Sorry Travis, I missed the fine print. From what I've read of deer hunting in Mexico the guide sends several people out to cut a track. Once one is found the animal is tracked and only then is the hunter brought in. Never interested me.

Very nice deer in Mexico and the hunt is probably more pristine, at least that is the vision in my head, however I refuse to send anymore american dollars down there. Great people and most are very hard workers but they are ruining this country. For those of you that don't live in Ca, AZ, NM or TX you don't have any idea how many of them are here. They are certainly a burden on our society. Can't say as I really blame them though. If I was a Mexican from Mexico I would do everthing I could to come to this country. There Country and Govt is way too corrupt for any of them to succeed in life.

I would much rather hunt bears in Alaska or moose in the Yukon. All with a bow or course. African hunts look too much like a canned hunt for my liking. Someday a trip to Argentina to hunt red stag and then to New Zealand. Other than those places the lower 48 has everything I want.

Huntazido- I'll admit this is neither the time nor the place for this but I live in Santa Maria, California and I deal with the illegal alien problem every single day! You know they are requesting that our teachers that arent bilingual be fired so that the bilingual teachers can teach the mexican kids that DONT SPEAK ENGLISH! CAN YOU BELIVE THIS? There in this country illegally - they get Medical, Food stamps free lunches and breakfast and THEY WANT MORE--yet theyre ILLEGAL!! I'm fed up! You havent had to deal with it yet if you're not in CA, AZ or NM but believe me, its coming to your state soon!! We have to do something or there will be little pockets of English speaking communities all around the United States just like theres "China Town" in San Francisco. It's going to be that ad. Those of you who read this that resides in New Mexico, California, and Arizona- please pass this on and explain to the others in the Mid West who havent dealt with this yet that it is coming. I hat e to make this post a political one but its the perfect time and the perfect place. America- we are in BIG trouble! We've let the illegal immigration thing go way too far. Too far that we may not be able to recover. Call your Congressman and Senator to tell them you want them to do something about it. Otherwise- your kids kids WILL be speaking spanish as the AMERICAN language. Lets save AMERICA!

Why do I like hunting Mexico?

For one I live in Texas and spend 3+ months each year hunting down here. I love hunting the brush country of south Texas and when I'm in Mexico chasing mule deer I feel like I'm back in Texas at the ranch. I only hunt on private lands and Mexico muledeer hunts offer that. I prefer to hunt on large private ranches, which Texas and Mexico both offer. The fact that I dont have to apply for a tag and I can go WHENEVER I want, is a huge plus. To me Mexico muledeer are the prettiest bucks you can hunt. They have a wonderful coat and make a much prettier mount then the big bucks back in the states. Mexico is my numbero uno spot when it comes to muledeer....

Everything you just described is available right here in Arizona for a fraction of the price... Oh except for the private land and the fences.

Donnie

Well AZWALKER, big private ranches is one of the biggest draws for me. Plus I dont have to wait for years trying to draw a tag and I dont have to hunt only when the F&G says I can. In Mexico I can go every year if I want.

Over the counter archery tags and 2 months total (split between early and late hunts) to do it in.... and yes every year! It does take alot more effort on your part but a little extra effort makes it all the sweeter. You go ahead and pay $8000 to $9000 for a mule deer, if you've got it... spend it. I'm not saying that its bad to go to Mexico to hunt.... just pricey as hell. I'd like to do it at least once. Every year??? Not for me. There are deer 30 min away from my house that rival the deer in Mexico and I don't have to pay all that money to hunt them. If you like Mexico... cool. I'm just trying to say there is a much cheaper alternative. Not to mention all the B.S. you have to go through to get your guns over the boarder. At any time the policia can take whatever they want off you (they do it all the time). Then you gotta deal with U.S. customs! Too much hassle.

Donnie

Well I respect your view. If I lived in Arizona I would probably stay home to, unstead of crossing the border. I'm not much of a bowhunter so the OTC bow tags dont mean much to me. And I never take a rifle into Mexico because I simply hate paper work and any hold ups. Most ranches have rifles back at camp that they will lend you. I dont go to Mexico every year but I do make it down there often, and besides hunting in West Texas its the only time I hunt muledeer. Although starting next year I hope to hunt Oregon every year for muledeer and/or elk.

The draw is the big horns. A lot like whitetail hunters going to Canada. I just have other hunts I want to go on and will probably never end up down there.
