Hi guy's,

I have a good friend who's wife has a late season dutton tag. I was wondering if anyone has been seing any bulls out there? We are going to go scout the area and would appreciate it if someone would mind steering us in the right direction. Thanks in advance guys!

Sniper & HighCountry, I replied to your PM's. I hope you guys get lucky and get big ol stinky!!!!

Try the head of Cottonwood park at the top and walk that trail out to the long ridge to the East don't be afraid to walk that ridge all the way down to the road this is where some GOOD bulls hang out but you will have to glass a lot for them, also if you get on that big rock that heads that ridge look back to the South you will see a lot of bulls on those hill sides, Adams head is good also get there before light and glass back to the NE and watch below you Bulls are crossing through there all the time. When I had a late tag I found some big bulls right off the road so don't be afraid to peak into some of those little canyons tucked in off the road. If I drew again I would be on that rock thats about a mile East of the top of Cottonwood you can see the world from there and if you have a few guys helping they can spread out on find you a good bull but good luck finding one thats not busted! You will see a lot of bulls at the head of Cottonwood and a lot of hunters just like I did but they all stay by the road and try to keep it easy the Dutton isn't easy but its worth drawing the tag.

It sounds like the Dutton was one of the toughest late hunts this year. How did you do ??

Sad to see. It use to be one of the best if not the best.

Two conservation tags have already been sold for dutton next year and neither one could even break $5000 at auction. That should tell us all something about the state of things on dutton.

Dutton is really struggling. My cousin had a late tag and i had the honor of going with him. We both had very high expectations for this hunt because of suggestions from friends, family and fellow hunters based on past success. But we were extremely suprised at the complete lack of elk. it took us 5 days to see a single elk!!! during those 5 days we probably hiked a good 8 miles, and glassed countless hillsides and canyons for hours on end. Finally on the last couple days i was there, we started to see a herd of about 70 elk with one good bull that i would estimate to be a 345 bull and a bunch of small 5 points and raghorns. but we just couldnt get a shot off due to distance and poor shooting light. it was very sad to see the elk herd struggling on a so called premium LE unit. it was also sad to hear all of the tag holders who had been on this hunt in the past talk about how this has been the worst late hunt in recent history. most of the good bulls were being taken by guys packing in on horses. my cousin did end up shooting a bull, but it was a small 6 point, something we thought we would be passing up every day we were hunting. This unit is in need of help.

Well Josh!

Might as well post a pic!

If you want?

Some of us don't care if it breaks the magical 400" mark!

A 380" Bull pic will work!:D

Just Razzin ya!

Post him up!

hunted with my wife this year on the late season. In the last 4 years with sister, brother, friends drawing this tag we have taken a 381,366,347,353, this year i spent 5 days before her hunt and about 5 weekends before her hunt also. Hunted hard everyday. the biggest bull i seen was 340 ish maybe. She missed this bull by an inch at 750 yards, i know long shot, but with the hard snow it was all we could do. We ended up shooting on the 3rd to last day a 310 ish bull, second biggest bull we seen. I looked at over 40 bulls in these days and scouting trips. GUYS THE DUTTON IS DONE, it was funny a DWR guy knocked on my camper the next morning after we had killed. I told him what we killed, and laughed , i mentioned you guys should be patted on the back, the DWR said they wanted 4-5 year old bulls, and THAT'S exactly what they got. JOB WELL DONE BOYZ. My wife had never killed a bull, and she wanted to shoot one been waiting for the tag for 11 years. She is happy as heck with her really nice bull, especially being her first, but being my wife and seeing what we have done on the unit over the last 3 years, she as we all could see the unit is DONE for big bulls, yea one or two big bulls will show up every year, but it's sicking and sad. I have an idea UTAH DWR UP THE TAGS AGAIN AND MAKE THE COW HUNT ON THE DUTTON LONGER GET EM ALL OUT OF HERE, BETTER THAN GOING UP THERE AND BEING SICK.

i also had a late season dutton tag, spent a lot of time scouting saw a few good bulls but nothing like 3-5 years ago. ended up shooting a 330 6 point. fun hunt but not what i was hoping for.

I hate to say this but I saw the writing on the wall after my Dutton muzzy hunt around 3 years ago. I don't know if you guys remember but there was A LOT of bickering about how tough it was to draw a UT LE elk tag. Just about everyone on this site was complaining that they couldn't draw a tag and that they wanted things changed so they didn't have to wait a lifetime to draw. It is pretty obvious that Utah upped tags in response to all the complaints. Now that bull quality and age class has plummeted the same guys are complaining about quality? I'd hate to say "I told you so" but you should have seen this coming? Hopefully UT can reach a compromise between quality and number of tags/years it takes to draw those tags.
