The one that got away

Last thursday 8/24/06 While hunting the bookcliffs (seep ridge) I arrowed one of the biggest bucks I have ever seen, only problem is instead of putting my arrow in his boiler room, I thought it would look a lot better stuck in his antler. Don't ask me how I accomplished this, I have no explanation.
I don't know how long the arrow will stay intact in it's new found home, it's a goldtip xt with green and white fletches. It appeared to have passed by the tines on the left side and embedded into the main beam on the right side so it is somewhat protected being on the inside of both main beams with the exception of the fletches sticking out a little ways.
If anyone else who has drawn out on this unit should happen to harvest this hog on one of the up coming hunts I would really like to know how big it is. You see I haven't beat myself up about it quite enough yet and I'm really into self torture.

That really sucks! Thank your lucky stars that it didnt hit him anywhere else. This could be a dangeous subject around here. Hopefully, some of these guys wont crucify you too much. I know that I wont.

That does suck ,but at least you own the fact that you missed. There are some around here who have never messed up in their lives...I have a couple of buddies who drew rifle tags , I will tell them to keep an eye out. Better luck next time. I actually know a guy who did the exact same thing a few years ago. Using his arrow length he was able to measure the buck at 33 wide. You would never guess where the nick came from either.

I know a guy who killed a buck a few years back during the rifle season, one of the antlers had a broadhead stuck in it. Pretty neat.

You need to give us some kind of explanation. It's a long way from his antlers to his vitals when in shooting position. Jitters, wind, sun, branches, give us something we can all learn from. How exciting yet frustrating. Good to hear he's ok though. Is your season over already or can you go back?

Jitters, wind, sun, branches, they're all good excuses, can I use them all?
Nothing I can say will make the shot any better or worse, the simple fact is I missed and missed bad, but just so I don't sound like a completly incompetent bowhunter, here's the situation. The deer is in a quartering away position with his head down feeding and turned to the left, which narrows the distance between the vitals and where the arrow actually hit considerably from what it would have been if it had been standing broadside. That still doesn't change the fact that I just plain blew the shot, and I was damn lucky not to have wounded it.
I don't know what you can learn from that, the deer was actually in a fairly good shooting position, the angle may have been a little sharp but not too bad. Just one of those things!

Actually option #3 sounds pretty good lol.
I would just like to hear about it if someone ends up harvesting the ol boy.

Whoever does get this buck should give you some type of finders fee credit since you lessened the buck's ability to hide with the white and green fletching bouncing around his head as he moves.

Yes I've slowed him down quite a bit too with the whole wind drag and all. Good thinking.

That would be neat if you got another chance at him . Mount him on the wall with a arrow in his mainbeam.

That would be a sweet mount! The one that got away.....NOT. Its good to know there are others out there that miss just like the rest of us! Thats too bad.

One of my friends found a deer shed antler with a broadhead in its bach fork, it was a awesome find.

Here's my motto, "Just one of those Flings!"

I feel your pain as I did this in Nevada a few years ago. The buck was broadside and to alert. He ducked and spun, catching the arrow on the outside of back fork/main beam. He was at least 45" wide going away. The next day, he had just the carbon adapter sticking out. I never got him or heard about it, but I did get a nice 27" on the same mountain.
