I guess I will never be able to figure out why the Canadians keep shooting little Bucks?? If you let them go another season, you may have had a real trophy!! ;-)

Beautiful!!!! So I guess you decided to let "Mac" grow another year? This guy looks like a pretty close relative (at least half of his rack) Congrats on a georgeous buck. Now, I jut hope you can hide mack from getting shot this year as I am dying to see his velvet pics in 07. Great job.

life IS good

Mac is in a zone I can't hunt this year. It is draw only but my buddy is drawn there so we are looking to get Mac for him. We will be after him on Monday morning. This guy canme from a totally different zone. I was able to buy an over the counter archery tag for that zone. Muzzleloader and rifle is by draw only though. Hopefully we can still put mac on the ground yet this year.

I will try and post the story tonight. I also went over to a buddies this morning. He arrowed a big non-typical friday night that rough net 205 and change non-typ. I will see if I can get a photo up of him. He is a brute.

Here is the story:

I went out with my wife on Saturday evening to a new area we had recieved permission to hunt. I was pretty much just expecting to spot for the night. We spotted a nice looking buck across a large slough. He had already shed his velvet and had some interesting points on the front forks. I decided to take a closer look. he ended up taking off just as I was about to start after him. I am not sure if I spooked him or the coyote which came out near him did. He ended up going up over a hill and dropped into a draw with a fair amount of bush. I worked my way towards where he disappeared while my wife waited on a hill with the spotting scope to watch. I crawled to the top of the hill overlooking the draw he went into. He was on the far side with 4 or 5 other bucks. He continued browsing south away from me. There was also another good buck in the draw which is the one I eventually shot. I figured that all of the deer were going to follow the original guy. I was just figuring I would be back next week to try and find them again when the big guy I shot and another small buck turned and started coming my direction. There was a saddle on the hill I was laying on and I figured they would come through there. It was the path of least resistance and contained some cover for the deer to move through. I crawled backwards down the hill and hurried over to the saddle and set up in some bushes. I got my release out and was going to clip it on the string. It is my target release ( Cater Insatiable) and it had gotten dirty while I was belly crawling and would not latch. I began to panic and shake and blow on the release to try and clean it. After about 5 minutes I finally got it to latch on the string and hold. I didn't have to wait much longer and I saw antler tips come bobbing up through the saddle. I drew my bow before the bucks head came into view and waited. He came into view and stopped right beside a small bush I had earlier ranged at 30 yards. He turned his head my way and I think he noticed something was out of place. Just as he turned his head I released and watched the arrow smack home. He spun and headed back the way he came. He stopped and stumbbled in some silver willow and I could see a big smear of blood on the willows. I knew he wasn't going to go far. He found a trail and went a few more yards them his legs went out from under him and he flopped down. At this point I headed back to my wife to get her and leave the deer for a while to make sure he was down for good. He turned out to be a 6X6 counting the brow tines and I am guessing he should gross around the 190 mark.

When in doubt, floor it.

Are you going leave the velvet on him and have him hung on the wall?

"Roadless areas, in general, represent some of the best fish and wildlife habitat on public lands. The bad news is that there is nothing positive about a road where fish and wildlife habitat are concerned -- absolutely nothing." (B&C Professor, Jack Ward Thomas, Fair Chase, Fall 2005, p.10).
