Nevada unit 10?

Where did you hunt? There are some great deer in 10 if you know where to go. I've spent the last 11 years guiding in that area. The problem for the average hunter is access. If you don't go where the deer are it's a tough hunt.

Yeah, access was the main problem in getting to where we were told to go. It was just too hot, there were too many people and way too many roads. Dont get me wrong I had a great time and learned alot, but I just didnt see the kinds of deer I expected to see, I maybe saw 15 deer in a week of very hard hunting and glassing. And what is going on with the cats and coyotes up there? They need to get that under control.

I hunted with huntn6inchers. We spent an entire week wearing the soles off our boots. We hiked all the way in to Overland Lake, glassed until we had black eyes, hunted the access points to the alfalfa fields, hunted over water, and pushed those miserable quakie thickets. Despite all the time we spent hunting and glassing during the week, we saw a few small bucks and a bunch of does. The deer we did see were very, very skittish.

As Tyson says, we heard cats daily. Kind of spooky thing happened. We hunted way back in toward Overland one day, ended up hiking out after dark. We came back the next morning at first light and a cat had killed a little spike buck right in the middle of the trail we came out on. Pretty intense.

We enjoyed the hunt up there, but came away somewhat disappointed. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I talked to a guy who shot a 26 incher over in Lamoile, I believe he said Lectkner Canyon. Said he saw about 40 bucks in that one canyon. A few larger than the one he took. Best of luck to all of you this coming season.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-06 AT 05:43PM (MST)[p]mickeyelk, the guy you spoke to ,was it a father and son by the name of ,jesse and rudy, my buddies ,jesse and rudy just harvested an awesome 26 inch 4and4 with eye guards , really tall, great back forks and good fronts ,in area 10.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-06 AT 05:48PM (MST)[p]Fldrw, you know jesse and rudy? Haha, small world. But anyway, jesse told me the buck that he killed up there was a little 3 by 4, I was told that the big one came from Utah. But on a serious note, have you ever met anyone more lucky than jesse, I dont think that he has ever come home empty handed.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-06 AT 08:18PM (MST)[p]I think we are talking about differant people, the guys I know have never hunted Utah, the buck I seen at the taxadermist in Henderson Nevada , was a typical 4 and 4 with scoreable eye guards, deep forks on the back and really nice fronts ,at only maybe 26 27 wide I would still put it in the mid 170's, and also the jesse I know has come home skunked more than a few times ,I know this cause WE have been on a number of hunts together where we have put horns in front of meat.Rudy and I have known each other for around 30 years , I knew jesse when he was messing up diapers , no bull ,I actually held jessies older brother when he was first born , Rudy and I were together on some of my most memorable hunts , my biggest muley and my first archery elk , wich was a cow hunt ,the buck I am talking about from this year from area 10 is most definately a typical 4 and 4 with nice eye guards

hogliver, myself and a friend were up at Overland 2 days before the archery opener and spent the night. The next morning we glassed up about 40 deer on over the top of the mountain. We went home that day but on our way down we saw the local outfitter headed up with about 10 people and about 15 horses getting ready for the archery hunt. Maybe the amount of people may have moved the deer a little. I've never seen or heard a mountain lion so I can't comment on them. Sorry your hunt was not so good but that Overland area is beautiful. fatrooster.

Yeah, we must be, kinda cool though that two father and son teams in the same unit with the same name. Sounds like they connected on a great buck though. Do you know when they were up there? I was up the last week of the season and those deer had been pushed around a ton, and they were really spooky. The lady at that ruby valley estates place told us that she had never seen so many people and pretty much all of the deer she saw come off the mountain were in the first couple of days, just bad timing I guess. Fatrooster, your not lying about overland being awesome, it sure is an awesome sight to come into that lake after an 8 mile hike huh?

them mt. lions can make some godawful noise's can't they! sometimes it sounds just like a woman screaming, spooky to hear in person when hiking in the dark!

Last weekend I connected on a small forkie in unit 103, with my ml. Last week of archery season, a friend and I saw a nice 26" 4x4. Also saw some decent 22-24" bucks first weekend and second weekend of muzzle loader. Deer in area 10 can be weird. Most of the deer we saw (most of about 40 in one day), were in the thickest stuff imaginable, or very close to it. We hunted areas where there was lots of buck brush, mahogany, and aspen patches. You could see some deer, move 50 feet, and they would be gone, not that they moved, but because the stuff was so thick, you just can't see. One other problem we encounterd was the amount of mule ear weeds we say. You just couldn't sneak around without the deer hearing you long before you could see them. I would have liked to get one of the better bucks we saw, but was absolutely exhausted from driving back and forth between Carson City (where I am attending training) and Eureka (where I live), and Elko (where we hunt from). There are some good bucks in area 10, but they are pretty difficult to get into, and take a lot of patience and a few cuss words, and a lot of luck, lol.
