Images sent to me said this buck was near Rangely, CO this year. Funny thing, as I just passed by there last week.
Looks like a shooter to me.
Just for curiosity sake, here's a Sitka Blacktail I took here in Alaska about 5 years ago with the same coloration:
When I talked to ADF&G about this, they said it was caused by a recessive gene. The same genetic phenomenom causes us to get the glacier and cinnamon phase black bears.
