I am proud to post my wifes first deer story. She shot it opening morning of the muzzleloader hunt here in Utah. She has come along way from the city girl I married ten years ago. I put her through hunter safety shortly after being married. I have always got her deer tags in hopes that she would want to kill a deer. She has always enjoyed the camp, and the hunt, but never wanted to kill anything. This year she decided she was going to do it, so we have been practicing most of the summer. We have been married just over ten years and I tease her, that I have converted her to an offical "redneck". She made a great shot and we had a great time. I will let her tell her story.

Sorry this is long, but you know how us ladies like to talk.

Thanks for all of your help with those meal ideas. My husband and my Father-in-law ate very well on their Nevada deer hunt. I just wanted to share my story about killing my first deer.

My husband woke me up at 4:40am (that is soooo early for me) we hurriedly got dressed and ready and got in the truck. My dear husband brought a friend and so they both sat in front and I grabbed a pillow and slept on the back bench of the truck. We drove for a long time. I think it was about 6:30am when we finally hit dirt road. We started our trip out with looking at some elk and listening to the Bulls calling to eachother. That in itself was worth the trip. After spotting some elk we drove to the area that we had been watching the deer for the last month. We were very diappointed to see 3 other truck full of hunters. That kind of bummed me out, but we didn't give up. We went to the area and looked for our bucks, but they were not there. We were all getting really worried because there was so many Elk we were worried that maybe they had ran the deer off. We looked for over an hour and didn't see a single deer. We finally were driving down a road that we had driven on 2 times already and my husbands friend yelled to stop. We all got out and he had foudn a deer. It was a forked horn. Well while they were looking I had to pee something bad, so I headed down into the Pinion (sp?) pines. I all the sudden hear my husband whistling for me.

Up top of the hill my husband is putting his binocular sling, and they are getting their guns. My husband says we found your buck. I got dumped all uneccessary belongings into the truck and started up the hilside. Now for a little background info all summer long I had been taking 3 mile walks at 6:00am. I was hoping to get into shape somewhat. Unfortunatly my lungs didn't think so, I was huffing and puffing so bad I was really worried that I was going to scare the deer away. It made me feel a little better when my husbands friend was just about as out of breath as I was. So we would climb for a while, and then we would rest to catch our breath. At some points I had to grab branches and boulders just to be sure to make it up the steep incline. My mouth was so dry I was kicking myself for not bringing some water.

We finally get to the top and hid behind a big pine tree. We then got down on all fours and craweled along a ridge up to a very big dead tree. My husband grabbed the shooting sticks from me and set the gun on it. He then moved so I could sit on the ground in front of the gun. I got the gun and looked through. My husband said the deer was the one on the left. I looked through the scope but it was bouncing so much it was really hard to see much of anything. So when I finally steadied my hands a little I could see the deer in my crosshairs. My husband said to take the safety off the Muzzleloader. Now at this point my husbands friend is feeling a little green with envy. He says "Hey its bigger than you told me", my husband told him if I missed that he could take the next shot.

With that said I lined my crosshairs up, put them smack in the middle of the deer. But the deer just wasn't lined up yet. but then all the sudden he turned broadside. My husband is saying "shoot, shoot". And I did. I could'nt see a thing because of the smoke. But soon as it cleared I could see legs in the air. We hurried over and the buck was still laying there. My husband and his friend were amazed the bullet went straight through the shoulder blades. (later when we gutted it we found the heart with a big bullet hole)
We got the rangefinder out and set it on the tree we used for cover and it said 135 yards.

Needless to say I have a proud husband.
In my own defense, I didn't get to do my hair or makeup!

Congratulations to both of you. That's awesome. Nice buck too. My wife is one of my favorite hunting partners.

BTW I thought your hair looked freshly brushed. After looking at the ugly mugs that are usually in these posts yours are very refreshing. Once when my wife was hunting sheep she asked me to carry a small folding hair brush in my hunting coat so her hair would look decent if she killed a ram. She knew I was going to take pictures and send them all over the world and wanted to look her best. She'd seen too many pictures of her with deer and antelope looking "ugly". I gladly carried it for 14 days. Unfortunately she was not successful and the brush went unused. A year later on another sheep hunt I found the brush in the pocket of that coat. Made me smile, kind of a bittersweet smile but a smile never-the-less.

Congrats again.

Congrats. Great pictures, great deer, great wife. Good luck on many more successful hunts whether something is tagged or not.

Congratulations great story and pics! Glad you enjoyed the hunt and we need more ladies in the field!!

Great story. I printed it and took it home to my wife. The hopes were to get her excited for her upcoming rifle hunt. I think it worked.

Not only did she get excited when she saw the photos, she said "I know them!!!". Seems shes from the same place you call home. Funny.

Congrats to the both of you...great buck.

My wife has her hunter saftey card and she has been elk hunting once and not been back since...just too busy at her work around that time...maybe someday!
