Just got back from our central Utah hunt. I shot him out of his bed late in the afternoon of the opener. It was really ironic because he was only a half a mile from our camp and I had glassed/hunted/chased deer about a mile past him all day. The sun was just right to see his left antler and ear sticking out of this thick brush. They really hunker down untl you're right on top of them.

The wind was perfect and he was looking away so I has plenty of time to set up and take him at 150yds. He is a 6X7, 28" wide and was aged at five years.

We also used pack goats to get us into the back country. They were awesome. Carried 50lbs each, are quiet, low-maintenance, and end up a family pet if you're nice to them. It beat the heck out of carrying it out on my back!

Good luck to everyone, keep the pics coming!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-06 AT 09:26PM (MST)[p]That's a nice buck, I like the idea of using goats to pack in and out. It looks like you have a great time. How did your buddy do.

Everyone else in the group struck out. Mostly blown stalks. With all of the recent snow/rain, the deer were a lot more spread out and really mixed their habits up.

Gator,

I guess I'm the "buddy" that you are referring to...Anyway, I like to think think that I am the old and wise guide (besides, I can't keep up with my kids anymore). I don't harvest deer very often (mostly by choice) but I thoroughly love being involved in the hunt. Watching my kids success is all of the "harvest" that I need. My boys love the outdoors and love the do-it-yourself mentallity.

BTW - Goats are awesome. They go anywhere that you can walk (literally), they are low maintenance and watch after themselves. Also, they leave no trace! We're hooked!

ADDICT....congrats on great lookin' buck. Gotta like the character on him. Normally I'd wanna see some more pics of the buck, but I gotta ask if you got any more pics of them goats? :) What a great way to go!

I thought those were Clays packs but didn't recognize the goats. I have rented from Clay a few times his goats are top notch.

swbuckmaster:

You actually recommended them to me up on the front last year. My brother and I hiked in to you up above corner canyon in the snow.

I remember we split up after talking to sneak on those bedded bucks in the fog. That was you, right? Did you stick one of them?
