how is the elk herd in Southern Colorado?

I use to hunt Colorado every year, usually units 77/78 and Weminuche wilderness as well as other places East/West and North of Pagosa Springs. Last year I went ... maybe 2004 the herd was way down, saw very little sign/elk.

What are the numbers like now? Still good elk hunting? thinking about going again this 2011 season .... at 41 years old I appreciate it more now than I did at 25
