Well I FINALLY won something....I am the lucky winner of the Expo San Juan Archery Elk hunt. I would love to hire a guide if possible (still might) but I really want to try and do this unguided. Does anyone have any experience in this unit they would be willing to share:)

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-11 AT 10:34PM (MST)[p]Mike--lots of guys on here who have drawn the tag in the past. Just do a search on San Juan here on the forum. Pete's hunt from last year is a good one. Brendon killed snake last year with the same tag. It will be a hunt of a lifetime for sure, make sure your prepared mentally for it as well as physically.

A great tag for sure to have...

Good luck..

Thanks Todd, BTO is at the absolute top of my list if I can find a way to make it happen. THe physical part of the hunt is in looking good......the mental part needs work:)

Congrats. Some excellant luck to have. I'm hoping to draw in thenext few years with 15 points this year. Keep us posted!!!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-11 AT 06:13AM (MST)[p]If you decide to go outfitter, BTO would be the team to pick.
C3 did pretty dang good down there last season.
There is a alot of good area's you will have to pick one and I think that is one hard part of the hunt.
Congrats

You are one lucky dog, that is my dream archery elk tag. Good luck, and have a blast. BTO would be at the top of my pick for guides on that unit as well.

You should check out Utah450 hunt challenge story, he is a great person to use for a guide as well. I believe there name is San Juan Outfitters, they will find you something good.

That's one sweet tag to draw!!! You're in for a hunt of a lifetime. Just make sure you're in the best shape of your life. All the great spots are way down in the nasty stuff :)

Congrats!

Pete

Don't let Pete know he will bring his air mattress and live with you until the hunt!! J/K . I also had a tag last year and loved every minute of it. I set the goal of a 370 and fell short. Hunted a couple bulls right in that score range but I should have taken BTO'S(todd)advice and not pass any 350 class bull if it presents a shot. Passed a couple great 350- 360 bulls early that I should have taken. Ended up with a 330 class bull but will never forget the ride. It is always to look back and say: If Only ---- Todd is right Emotionally I went from high's to lows and almost left. I was emotionally drained that I didn't achieve my goal. With my freinds help and coaxing I deciding to shoot one the second to the last day of the hunt. I was down there a lot during the glory days where it was common for the outfitter I worked with to take home 380 to 400 bulls. Seen only one of those type of bulls last year. I guess my advice is don't hunt for a number, hunt for the thrill of that hunt. There is just something about that mountain that grabs you and won't let go. Congratulations and enjoy the ride!

First Congratulations mg!
You won an amazing tag, and in this day and age, I would treat it like a OIL opportunity, because it will likely not happen again. That being said, I would also consider the amount of money and time you will spend on your own trying to do it DIY. If you are like most of us, you live a long way from San Juan County and scouting will be time consuming and expensive. Saving you that, plus local knowledge, is where a good outfitter earns his keep. And if you have more time than money then maybe living on that mountain would be worth it!
But whatever you decide, you are on a ride of a lifetime...so have fun man!

There is no question I would hire BTO if I ever draw that tag, especially an archery tag (where having a seperate calling is a big advantage). It truly is a OIL tag. Money well spent in my book.

Send Bggmhntr a pm, he seems to know the area very well and is always looking to help someone out. He got a nice bull there a few years back. And helped a guy I know get an outstanding bull last year.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

Thanks everyone for the advice so far. You guys have me more excited than I was before.....and Pete feel free to bring the matress anytime:) Still have a lot of homework to do but I tell you what it just adds to the excitement!!!

Bggmhntr can help ya too, he spent a great deal of time down there and have found a few honey holes. Killed a great bull down there too.
