went hunting this morning with a friend of mine whos boy drew X7B junior tag. Say a few does and a fork that another hunter shot. Any info on where some larger bucks might be would be appreciated. He will probably go back and try again next weekend. Thanks

well believe it or not we used to access verdi peak from off the freeway, we would go into Nevada, make a U turn and head back into Cali, a couple minutes up I-80 there was a jeep trail that led right up the side of the Mt. from off the freeway, it was pretty good hunting if you got alittle weather, the last time my bro-inlaw Bow hunted it was 4 or 5 years ago and saw some bucks 24" to 26", there's also some water up there.

there's an easier way up there on the back side which would be the north side, but can't remember the details....good luck

I drew an X7B tag this year, too. I used to hunt here years ago when you could with an archery only #1 tag, and my, how things have changed. I'd intended to get up for scouting before the season, but never did. Sorry now. I spent Friday looking, and not only did I see very few deer, but my foot forays into some of my old haunts revealed almost no sign on the west slopes of the Verdi range. Friday morning I was on Verdi Peak glassing the burns to the north... (foggy that morning) and nada. I drove over to Dog Valley, and checked for trails and fresh scars-- NADA. Saw four deer going to water across Henness Pass road, all flat-heads. Went up Brushy Mountain, triple nada. Went up the burn along the power lines and glassed some more. Quad nada.

Saturday morning found me still hunting up along the burn and the edge of timber, very little sign. No deer. No beds, few droppings were old, and no trails.

Four guys in a jeep were coming down from Verdi, and they had seen nothing. Three guys who came in on my campsite on Friday night said they saw a couple does/fawns.

I'd stay away from Verdi. I went to the west side and saw 10 does/fawns crossing from Sardine Valley (that's X7A) towards the lake (X7B) but no horns. Still, alot better than the east side. I'm going back up on Wednesday through Friday, and plan to work the west side. I'll let you know what I find out. I've seen better activity in both D3 and D4 zones this year, and probably should just go back to those areas, but the X tag only has a 2 week season, so I'll try to fill it.

Good luck, and let me know how the boy does-- check back for my results on Friday, I'll try to post before too late, if I can.

Sounds like you looked over alot of the same area we did. We too looked at the old burn. Looked awesome, I was shocked we saw no Deer. Hopefully things will inprove as they cant get much worse. Good luck on your next trip and I will wait to hear your report.

Well I don't no the area but I went to Reno this week end. We were past Truckee and traffic was backed up because of a wreck. While I was sitting there the north side looked as if a fire had gone through the area a few years ago. Well I look up the hill and bam theres some deer. My wife is going nuts tring to see them. About that time I seee horns. See couldn't believe I could see horns. In total there was about 8 deer the buck looked to be a nice three or four point. Wish I could tell you were but I would hit the burns in the area. Nocalhonker

Me and my buddy will be taking my son and his daughter up there this weekend for their junior hunts. He has been scouting and has been seeing some decent bucks. I hope they are still there this weekend.

Buckmaster28, bucks have been pushed back away from the roads. They are still high... go as high as you can... and are bedding in the timber on the northern sides of the higher ridges. In general, the area north and west of Stampede Lake (an older burn area) has plenty of deer, but your friends junior is going to have to get out and hunt via foot. Good luck this weekend... I've seen lots of does and young of the year, but no small bucks lower around springs and meadow areas. I think the bow hunters pushed most of the bigger bucks away from the easy to get to spots. Also, the bucks are still hanging together- bachelor groups. I didn't get mine yet, but hopes are better for next week. Good luck!

Well, bottom of the ninth.

I'll be up in X7B this weekend with my brother. Maybe I'll run into a few of you MM'ers (or at least kick something your way). Without any sign of weather (actually increased temps) we've got our work cut out for us. Good luck.

Well, I finally got mine, after roughly nine days in the field. Found a pair of bucks in the old burn north of Stampede, they were bedded in a hidden basin about half way up the mountain.

Spotted him from above, he never knew what hit him. Neck shot from about 120 yards downhill angle (no meat wasted!). First neck shot I ever made that didn't kill outright-- had to finish him. It was the only shot I had, and boy do I feel lucky.
