Well like I'd said in an earlier post, I drew a Wyoming G tag, first time putting in, first time drawn, LAST TIME HUNTING THAT AREA! Everyone kept telling me ?it aint what it used to be.? Now, I can't compare what the greys is now to what it used to be, but I can say for sure ?IT AINT WHAT YOU?RE HOPING FOR!? I didn't just give it a half hearted effort. Three different trips in with the horses. Opener was a Joke, second weekend missed an average buck, last trip in took a lesser buck. People, people, and more people. Very few deer to speak of, let alone bucks, and I say this after hours of glassing multiple drainages everyday. ATVs oh I don't even want to speak of the ATVs. Four wheeler tracks where God never intended tracks to be. I thought I was hunting Utah! Actually, I think I was with all the orange license plates driving around. The worst thing is I drew first year of the points system, now I'm one down and won't spend my points on that unit again! Better to learn now than later. Guess the research starts now for a new WY unit, don't want to chase the caboose end again, cause the G train has come and gone!

I had the same experience, only I actually saw a buck get poached and pushed over a cliff by a guy - antlers must have been too small. Two other guys, knowing me and my hunting partner were glassing a bunch of bucks and waiting for them all the to come out - we'd been watching them for days and knew their patterns - were on a cliff, about 100 feet directly above us, shooting directly over out heads, at deer that were 500 yards out. We know all this because we went to talk to them and they said they were sorry for shooting over out heads but they knew that if they did not shoot that we would - and the bigger of the bucks was not even out yet. .

Anyhow, I have a ton of bad stories from that trip. I wrote it all down and sent it to Wyoming fish and game. . .

Sorry to hear about your experience. It sucks to put that much effort into what you thought was going to be a hunt, only to find that you could just as easily hunted from the truck!

Hope you had some good pack stories and some nice time around the fire!

Forkwest, Sorry to hear your unfortunated experience up there.
I had a similar experience, more jack asses up there than you can shake a stick at. At about day 8 of our hunt, after seeing only small 20incherish bucks, we said screw it, and went up to hit that bar up in Alpine. A hell of a good time in Alpine, but the hunting was fair at best!

Sounds bad. I never really like the Greys for deer much anyway, better for elk. I started hunting the salt river in the mid 70's. It was awsome for sure. I bought a nice ranch out of Smoot Wy and one in SW Idaho by Geneva. Life was great! Then the Ute's started coming, more and more of them. Sold out to them and bought a nice place in California for Blacktails and hunt muley's in Nevada! Life is good again. Leave next Tuesday.

if you guys want anything to be done about this you need to complain to the Game and Fish. the guy who is in charge of that deer herd has completely destroyed it. His name is Gary Frailick and as long as he is in charge that area will never be good. he claims every year that there are 50,000 deer living in the wyoming range. This is not the case and somthing has to be done if that deer herd is ever going to recover

I want to make it clear that this post is not just sour grapes cause I didn't kill a better buck. Rather more of a public service announcment. With the new point system and increased non-res fees, one should really think twice before blowing it all on this tag. Just one mans perspective, but something I wish I'd have ready back in March when I searched the archives and applied for the G tag.

I've been saying this for years. I went to the Greys every year from 1983 to 1997 and said I'd never go back until management changes are made. Too bad anyone goes there any more. It really could be a gret place if it was well managed, but it is now past tragedy into the joke phase. And G&F still does not get it. It's really sad. Don't go there, seriously.

Region G definitely isn't a SUPER spot anymore. The last 2 years we have seen far less deer and far fewer BIG bucks. This year we were pounded by rain and snow just about everyday. Tough hunting.

Out of 3 hunters, Marco killed a 26-incher (180ish) and I killed a 27-incher (180ish). Can't complain too much, but it has changed just in the last 4 years.

I only saw 1 other hunter while out hunting. 1 guy!!! So, I can't complain about the people. It didn't seem to me that there were that many people up there this year. ???? Maybe the weather had everyone hunting in the bar's in town???? LOL

I doubt I'll be returning, but who knows? I do like hunting that high remote stuff, just wish there were more big bucks.
