Idaho Application

I am thinking about applying in several states next year and was a little confused about Idaho. The way I read it you have to have a hunting license to apply, and those licenses cost about $140, and if you don't draw you just kised that money good bye.
Nevada seems to be the same way or am I just confused?

Nope you are not confused. That is the way it is. However, atleast in Idaho you can pick up over the counter elk, deer, bear, etc tags if you don't draw. Plus, you have a real good chance of getting a second or third choice cow tag.

Also, in Nevada you gain a preference point if you don't draw. So, atleast you can somewhat plan a hunt based on draw odds.

I'm going to start putting in as well next year. I don't know if I will apply for Idaho, though.

If I'm going to be paying $150 for the license, I would like to have the opportunity to hunt. If I pick up an OTC tag for whitetail/mule deer, will I lose points? Also, are there any good OTC units where I could find a nice deer without overcrowding? I will bowhunt if it means I can get a good unit.

Also, doesn't Arizona use the same system? I'm planning on applying there as well. Any other states that do this? (Buying the license to apply)?

Thanks.

Nope you will certainly not lose points. But only because points do not exist in Idaho.

Arizona requires a license also, and Oregon you need to purchase a license too... so it is not just Idaho and Nevada...

and Utah is going to require a license also next year, I beleive it will be a $17 small game or something.

Oregon is about 78 or something like that to apply. They are also thinking about going to points in Idaho this next year. I voted against it, but don't know what the conclusion was. Its just gttingdarn expensive. Such as applying for moose or sheep in Wyoming which went from 10 bucks to a hundred or something like that. It all adds up let me tell you. I don't even want to know what it all adds up to.

So how does one draw a tag in Idaho? A pure lottery?

For states that do have a point system, do you lose points if you buy an OTC tag for that species? I will be applying for Arizona this coming year, putting in for Elk, muleys and pronghorn, but I might buy an archery muley tag, will I lose my point?

I am going to apply for Utah as well. But I think someone may have goofed in giving the information. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it will cost RESIDENTS $17 plus the cost of application, but it will be $45 for Nonresidents. Still not too bad though.

Thanks.

I Dont know how we got from Idaho to Utah...but here we are. From the Utah DWR website...What will be new for 2007 is that you will be required to buy a small game hunting license in order to apply for big game tags. The cost of that license will be $65 starting July 2007 if approved. PLUS, you will still have to pay the license application fee that will go up to $10. This is for non-residents. So, It will cost $75 to simply put in for a draw tag. This is very similar to the way AZ does it but it is still cheaper. I understand they could use the money, but damn... it is going from only 5 bucks to apply to 75 in one year...thats a hell of a increase.
