Anyone been to this unit before? I drew one of the new 4th season tags. 95% of my hunting is archery so I've only been rifle mulie hunting a few times. This is a relatively small unit, and I'll just be staying in a Motel in Gunnison. I was planning on arriving 3 days in advance to scout around a bit. Do you think that is adequate? Thanks.

Three days should give you enough time to learn the major roads. There is access off Hwy 50 at Doyleville and Sargents. There are access roads off Hwy 114 also. You might try the area east of Needle Creek reservoir. Plan for snow and cold weather.

Do you know a good place for me to sight my rifle in? I called the biologist and he said the Conservation Club has a private range there that they sometimes have available for hunters, but when I e-mailed them they said it's just private. I figure I can just go find some BLM land, but thought maybe there's a place the locals go.

I booked a cheap motel in town for a week. It looks like it's close to the deer concentrations. Figured I didn't want to mess with a tent that time of year if I don't have to. I will be there solo.

Howdy Zimbo,
Haven't seen you around much since your farewell speech & self imposed boycott of this sight. Maybe with your advanced years your experiencing early signs of Alzheimer's & you just forgot about all the nasty things you said, that or you just wanted something again & found it in your heart to forgive us ;-)

LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-06 AT 11:49PM (MST)[p]What are you talking about, friend? Are you familiar with the Gunnison area? Has any snow fallen at lower elevations?

Lot's of snow above 9,000 ft. Snowing in the valley too, but melting. It was 18 degrees this morning, so you'll be glad you're staying in a motel. The local gun range has what they call Sight-in Days. It's open to anyone, you just pay $5 per rifle. I think by 4th season it will be over though. There are a couple areas where people shoot on BLM. One is on CR 10 north of town. The Hartman Rocks area south of town is also popular.

Wow...Zim, when I have some time I am going to do an search, hopefully BFE can get to it first.

Dang Ken!

With the year you have already had with that dandy bow bull from your Nv. hunt.... now this sweet tag in Colo..... how ya gonna beat this year.. in the future! ha

Robb,

I am real pleased with my draws this year. Two good tags with the seasons far apart so as not to cause conflict. However, I did not draw anything last year so this is a make-up. I got my Illinois lifetime license this year as well so I am having fun here locally with 2 buck whitetail tags. They got some hogs here even on public land.

The mulie hunt should be really fun. My unit is right next to town. I'll get to stay in a motel. Booked a room for one week right next to the hot tub!

Hoping 3 days is enough to look over some bucks before the opener.

BFE, What are you referring to? Zim is the man this year and I wish him the best of luck!!!! Wish I knew that unit so I could help Zim. BFE, you must just be jealous! ZIM, good luck!

Turns out I have a court hearing on November 10th, so I won't have to decide if I want to spend more days scouting anyway. One less decision to make.

In the meantime the whitetails are moving here at home. Temps are unusually cool. Hope to score one P&Y before I depart. Have to work the next 3, but will then have 13 days to do it.
