I saw a good trophy class buck taken yesterday... it was a real dandy - likely go close to 200.Wish I had a pic!

I also saw a PIG get away from some guys unscathed!

How'd you do and let's see those pics!

Well, I was quite disapointed with my choice of hunting area. I should have known better than to go somewhere with so many roads. I was amazed at the Utah Orange Army!!! I wish I would have taken some video of the Opening Morning Circus. Saw a doe missing her front leg from an errant bullet. Two points and spikes were dieing at a rate that was unbelievable.

If I can vote for MicroManagement and reduction in tags, I would do it!!!

I will think twice next time I have the chance to hunt general season rifle in Utah. I've hunted ID, WY and Colorado and have yet to experience that type of pressure and chaos.

The funny thing is that my friend hunted the same area the week before (disabled hunter opportunity) and we saw upwards of 300 deer and nearly 30 bucks the Monday before. Oh what a few thousand people can do to a mountain range.

Don't get me wrong, I still saw deer and could have killed several "pisscutters". Just the experience was lacking and I left the hills at 1:00 and went home!!!

Some may get on this thread and say, I saw no one and the deer were so numerous, I couldn't keep them from jumping into my back pack for a hike down the hill to my truck. That just emphasizes my point for the need for micromanagement and dispersal of pressure.

The only cowslayer sold on the idea and methodology of "MicroManaging", and until I see one of the sportsman groups pushing this for the disgusted/disgruntled hunters, I am done donating my money!!!

We have to much potential in them hills to fritter it all away.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-06 AT 04:31PM (MST)[p]Just back from southern Utah, Beaver to be exact!

Seen! Lots of deer, lots of nice bucks! I really do think wildlife management has done their job. As a 30+ year outta state hunter, I can say... there is a big difference from a few years back, Yes! LOTS of Orange, although not as many as in prior years.

My Brother and I went up.. Without tags and rifles.. Just to be up there for the hunt! Its funny, the place we've hunted either has a few hunters.... Or practically no one! And truth is... ya gotta have guys moving around to keep the deer moving in this particular area.

The only disappointment I've had in Utah was this year, story is..... We come up behind 3 trucks with circa 10 locals... We wait a few minutes, thinking some may have gotten out to pee, after 5 minutes or so... We rolled up behind them, this guys asks us ?where you hunting? we told him we were not hunting... he than say ?well, stay behind us? The trucks were blocking the road... they have even opened both doors so that we could not pass..

Soon as they got into the trucks and close the door....we sped past them... the guys starts hollering at us.... we pressed on... Rifle or not! We had a blast.... Enjoyed the opener.. Watch a lot of action through the Steiner?s .. Watched several bucks take their last steps, seen two real nice four points with a couple of lesser Bucks slip away...

Oh.. Yeah.... the ROADHOGS must?ve fired 40 rounds between the lot of them...

I hunted the Northeastern Region. I didnt see hardly any deer, and only two DINKY little bucks. I saw a TON of elk, mostly bulls, including 2 that go 360 plus. Im back home for a few days and then Im heading back for a day or two at the end of the week.

I saw a few bucks taken in the area I was hunting, including a 24 inch 4x4. My buddy took a nice 4 point in the SOutheastern Region. I will post pics as soon as I get them.

I also hunted the coveted Northeast region and was also dissapointed. I only saw about 15 deer all day and most were over a mile away. I didn't see any bucks and heard very little shooting. Most of the shooting I did hear was up by the roads so I assumed road hunting was more productive than hiking a few miles. I don't really care if I get a deer or not but I would like to see a few bucks for my 14 year old to try to harvest. At least in the areas I hunted, the UDWR is full of deer pooh about the deer numbers increasing and seeing more young bucks.

ONE OF THESE DAYS rutnelk & TUFF BUFF ARE GONNA START LISTENING TO ME RATHER THAN THE UDWR!!!

IT WAS A SLUG FEST IN MORE THAN ONE WAY AGAIN THIS YEAR!!!

THEY WERE HAMMERING Nomad BUCKS LIKE THEY WERE IN UNLIMITED SUPPLY!!!

SOMEBODY MUST OF GOT SOMETHING HALF DECENT BUT I NEVER SEEN IT!!!

THE HIGH COUNTRY WAS POUNCED WITH ILLEAGAL ATV'ERS LIKE NO OTHER!!!

SEVERAL NEW TRAILS BUSTED IN!!!

IF I CAN GET SOMEBODY FROM THE USFS WITH ENOUGH BALLS I WILL BE MAKING A SPECIAL TRIP UP TO SHOW THEM THE DAMAGE!!!

NOT A FRICKEN LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSON ANYWHERE!!!

I'VE NEVER EVER SEEN THE Nomad REGION HIT THIS HARD!!!

ARE YOU SURE THEY ARE ONLY ISSUEING SO MANY PERMITS IN THE NE REGION???

THERE WERE SEVERAL SELF-INFLICTED TUNE-UPS IN EFFECT THIS YEAR!!!

TOO BAD A GUY HAD TO DIE OVER A WORTHLESS POS WHEELER BUT IT HAPPENED!!!

TWO OTHER HEAD-ON COLLISSIONS ON THE SAME CORNER IN DRY GULCH USA!!!

THE ONLY bobcat WATCHING THEM GROUNDPOUNDING Nomads LIKE Moosie SMACKING QUACKERS IN
A BIRD REFUGE!!!

There was a slaughter on 2-points this weekend where I was hunting. It is sad to see that happen. There were a ton of people. I hunted by koosharem resevour area. I wish they could make the southern unit a 4 point or better. Why won't they do it? They should have a unit for people who want a two point and units for people who want to see more bigger bucks!!

Yeah I hate Utah's general seasons too.....This is about Elk, but has happened to me and my step-dad (That is another story)

Years ago I had a spike elk down and was getting ready to finish him when some other hunter shot him to finish him. I had hit him at about 250 yds while he was on a full run and knocked him out of the herd and he had run over a hill. I ran full bore about 1000 yds to finish him and when I got over the hill, that he had ran over, I stopped for a moment to catch my breath and that is when the other hunter (Whom had watched the elk actually lay down and saw me run over the hill) shot him just as I was getting ready to put a bullet in him to finish him. (BTW I was standing almost right in his line of fire from the Elk to me). Then he approached the Elk with a side arm drawn to inform me that it was his Elk. For a brief moment I thought about using my rifle (Thank God I did not do that), but I just turned and walked away and said whatever. The worst thing is that the A**h**le had his son with him and that is why I choose not to do anything. All the time I was thinking what is this guy teaching his kid..............!!!!!!!!!!

After that experience I pretty much went to bowhunting since it is hard to threaten someone with a bow....

Just a message I thought I would share

bobcat, I will heed your warning next year and will hopefully draw a different region. Give them illegals (ATV'rs)heck and keep them on the legal trails. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing an atv where it shouldn't be and I saw plenty of this on the elk hunt. Anyway, I will be in search of bobcat's nomad buck again so a first year hunter can hopefully experience the thrill of his first buck.

I hate to be the one to break the news, but the "good old days" have been gone for forty years and they aint coming back! It's not the DWR's fault either! They are doing the best they can with the number of people who want to hunt and the limited resources. I agree that they could make smaller units and micromanage but if they do the complaints will fly that they are taking away our freedom.
I love hunting just like everyone else on this site, but I think as "hunters" we shoot ourselves in the foot by always being so negative about our experiences.
I don't like the crowds on the opener either, so my son dragged my fat old 57 year old butt on a 10 mile hike in an area we knew not many people would go. We had a great time, pretty much by ourselves. We only saw two little bucks (which we let go) but we also saw a very nice buck taken by a teeage kid. What I am trying to say is---the experience is what you are willing to put into it and I for one am glad I had a chance to make it a great day!

The north manti/skyline drive did not have many hunters or many deer. I did not have a tag so I was spotting for my dad I modified my pack frame a bit to carry my 4 year old on it and it worked pretty good. Hiked down an old jeep road then out on a point built a fire for the boy then glassed up a nice 4x4 I think he may have been the last deer on the mountain. we watched him for a while Dad did not want to shoot and Gavin was getting cold so we left. It was funny to watch the 4 wheelers drive glass drive glass and not even see this deer.
We decided to find my uncle and his grandsons and let them try and get the buck. This took 4 hours to find them and get them back on the deer. Then it got around us, dad spotted it in the next canyon got the boys 15 & 17 back on it and the older one got a bullet in him then my dad tracked it down and finished it off. I missed most of the action keeping to the top with my boy. The deer ended up just over 25" wide 4x4 an awesome first buck. The forest service was out heavy on the skyline Sat. and Sun. writing tickets for anything possible. They did tell my uncle it was the best buck they had seen as of Sun. night.

IF you are referring to my post bighorn, you must have read it wrong. I didn't blame the UDWR for the low deer numbers, I said they were full of deer pooh about higher deer #'s and seeing more small bucks in my area. I don't require a lot to have a good time while hunting, but seeing some deer is a usually pretty nice. Like I said, I don't need to shoot a buck but I would like to see one for my son. And by the way, your last sentence could be construed as a negetive comment toward others who have posted on this thread. Remember, always be positive.

rutn, My little editorial was not aimed at you and I didn't mean it to be negative either. I guess I am tired of the "slob hunter image" a few seem to perpetuate (and the media jumps all over!) I am sure that the anti-hunters will climb all over this shooting at each other incident--when it is such a minority of hunters that act that way. Anyway, I hope you can get out again and maybe see something before it's over for another year. Good Luck

I understand your frustration with the slob hunters because I am tired of them myself. And yes I am sure the anti's will have a field day with Clem and Eli up in Wasatch County. It's pretty sad that people can't police themselves and respect each other and the land that we all enjoy. I am going out tonight after work and hopefully bessy's nomad buck will step out for a few minutes. Good luck to you as well littlebighorn.

BUL_KRZY,

Seeing nobody is posting I'll post a few. Opening day we passed 9, the big one only being a 20" 3x3. Then on Sunday I passed up 7 and took the 8th buck I watched bed down.

Looking off a cliff 30 yards above the buck, if you look close you can see his left antler and body:

One shot in the neck/back at 30 yards, he didn't even move:

The fun is over:

Nice buck there AK... I know there were more UT bucks taken - let's see em!

The snow today and tonight should make the next few days interesting! :)

AK,

Those are some awesome photos. I'm surprised that you didn't just jump off the ledge and stab him with your knife...LOL. Congratulations on a great buck!

Wow a bright spot tonight, I was able to watch a group of hunters pass a 2 point up tonight. Hope he doesn't get wacked tomorrow. Couldn't believe it!!!
