my buddy drew an archery tag here.
were kinda going in blind, which i'm sure not sceeeered of, but any general info is all i'm looking for.

what type of bulls in the unit?
elk #'s?
can we borrow your tree stand? ( j/k, a little sarcasm)

anyway, thanks.

by-the-way, i've hunted in every state except arizona or nevada. if i can help someone with some info i'd be more than happy to!

I'm glad you put this up, as my Wyoming buddy also drew that September tag and I will be tagging along to help, so I hope we get a little info. from any of the other MMers here who know the unit. Thanks in advance for any forthcoming help!

Congratulations on the tags. Lots of bulls, you will have fun. You can expect bulls any size in this unit. You can hunt the big pines to the desert. A monster bull way over 400 was killed in the desert a few years ago but he was a freak one.

I know it is general info but honestly they can be in one canyon one day and another the next. Get in shape! Plan to cover lots of ground for the perfect set up. I do not use tree stands or blinds so this is just my opinion. Your welcome to call me for more info 928-978-1999.

Have fun and enjoy.

This young man took this bull a few years ago, he is from California.

Congrats on the tag. have 2 tags for the same hunt, it is a very good unit with lots of nice bulls including some pushing the very high 300. Started scouting today and the unit is lookin verry good. Summer rains have the grasses greened up and the water holes looking good. I would recommend being mobil for the best success as the animals move alot in this area. I will be scouting every weekend so if you have an area in mind let me know and I will give it a look.

Hello 300wbymann & TOPGUN,
If you haven't already, get a Coconino National Forest Map & go
to the AZGF website & find the "Hunting/ where to go" section.
The info is general but I think it is helpful.

If you want to "SEE" a ton of elk, go to Mormon Lake and park at the overlooks off FH3 on the east side of the lake!

That entire lake bottom is closed to all vehicular access but it sure is cool to sit up there with a spotting scope and watch em. A couple weeks ago we watched six bulls, (4 were 300 +, and 2 were easily 350 +) leave the lake bed together heading south right past the lodge & cabins. Where those bulls will be come hunting season is anybodys guess!

To list only a few:
We have seen elk on Mormon Mtn, Long Park, Casner Park, Buck Mtn, & Roundup Park in the last two months alone.

If you are an experienced elk hunter and know how to use your calls, I can almost guarantee you will get into elk in any/all of those areas.

My son drew a Sep archery cow tag & I drew a late Oct rifle bull tag. We have been up several times already mainly just checking old "honeyholes" from past hunts, and learning new ones.

As has been said already, the elk do move around quite a bit. That is actually a good thing. There are elk just about anywhere you go in that unit, just some areas more than others.

I'm sure there are others that frequent this site, that know that unit far better than I do. I hope I haven't ticked them off with my suggestions.

Hope this helps & GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the great information Doug! We are actually zeroing in on a couple locations right up that way and we are experienced elk hunters, especially if they're talking. I think we are going to have a great hunt in 6A and I hope to post some good photos late in the year after I get back to the computer in December. I have a bunch of hunts in 4 states and will be gone from Labor Day until late November, so it's going to my busiest Fall ever! Thanks again---MIKE
