I'm headed to SE New Mexico in about a week to hunt the sand dune country. I've never been there and would like to hear more about the terrain, etc and what type of buck is usually considered a "big" deer for the area. I know there are lots of oilfield roads but are there areas you can hike to to get away form road hunter's and is there enough elevation change to set up and really glass? Just picking your brains.

T264,
What part of 31 are you hunting? If you are hunting around Carlsbad or Hobbs I can help you out. Just let me know and I may even be able to guide you to some prime areas where some big boys hang out. I have seen several bucks that are in the 25 inch or bigger range this year. One of them was about 28 inches and sported a 170 plus 4x4 typical frame. So if this sounds good just let me know and I will be happy to help! If not good luck on your hunt.

The chances of a giant buck are not great, but you probably know that. There are in some areas with alot of deer, probably more sheer #'s than alot of places. Anything can happen pal, "lead in the air-hope in the heart". Good luck.
