My nephew came over tonight and posted this photo for me. I don't think I could do it by myself, anyway here is the buck I took this year in E. Calif. Like I said earlier not the buck I was after but that's how it goes. My boy's were so excited as you can see, the wife on the other hand not as excited.

Thank you eelgrass I appreciate that very much. I hope you had success this year.

Opening morning the ol man and I were hunting this area that we had seen a bigger buck earlier in. I was standing on a rock while pops pushed some mahagony to me. I looked down the hill and seen several bucks running away from us approx. a mile away. The bucks ran down to a nob and stopped, they slowly worked their way over the ridge and the last time I saw them i could just see a couple of bucks heads in this dead mahagony. The wind was blowing strong in our face, so we snuck down there and peeked over the edge, to the right was the mahagony where I had last seen them. I motioned to pops we had to move up. We moved up and looked over the edge and the mahagony was to our left. So I motioned to dad we had to move left. Dad stayed where he was and I moved to my left. As I stepped over the edge the buck I shot was laying there looking at me at about 40yds. Then they were up and running I shot him and yelled at dad they were going out the bottom, pop's was unable to connect. There was a buck in this group alot wider then the one I got. It was a tough shot for me(40yds) but I was able to make it (JK). We had practiced long range shooting all summer anticipating a long shot, well it paid off. 4 yrs ago we did the same in E. Oregon, anticipating a long shot. Both dad and I shot our bucks at less then 35yds. same type of scenario spot and stalk. Dad's buck was 32" and mine was 27" that was 4yrs ago in E. Oregon. This year E. Oregon was alot different. We spot and stalked two bucks up there this time though we had to shoot a looooonnnngggg ways like 70-80yds (JK) pop's buck was a nice 19" 3x3 and mine was a 17" 3x1 he had broke his horn off on the left side.

Nice buck. It looks like your Boys are dressed and ready to join you on the hunt in the near future. Great job and continue to share our great sport with the young.

Congrats to you on the great CA Buck and having the family there with you too, a great time even if the wife isn't too happy. LOL

So what was your wife's beef? My wife and I were once out at one of my secret spots (Signal Peak) and we came across a magnificent 4-pt. He was such a majestic, velvet clad animal. When he split the scene, I looked at her and asked "Did you see the rack on that bruiser!?!?" My wife, wide-eyed and open-mouthed replied " Yeah, and did you see the hip on that guy!?!?"(my wife is a horse person and really takes note of conformation before anything else). Anyways, congratualtions on your successful hunt. Your photo really reminds me of when I was their age out hunting with my dad and uncles. I know they had to be very proud of you and very excited. That is great that they were able to share the experience. When I go deer hunting these days, all my wife has on her mind is a juicy venison pot roast. Good job buddy.

I forgot to ask, where were you hunting? We used to live in Bridgeport, CA, and my wife shot her first buck there. I also took my first traditional archery buck there. I am thinking about applying there (x-12) next year mostly for a trip back into the beautiful Sierra Nevadas.

Patxarano, we were hunting just north of Susanville. We were not in the Sierra's. PM me if you would like more details.
