I wanted to thank all you guys that gave me the great tips on setting my son up with his first rifle. We practiced all summer, starting out with a .22 and working up to his 7mm-08.The practice paid off,he made a great 168yd shot to anchor this fine buck.I also have enclosed a pic of his first buck he shot in Ohio with a muzzeloader.I wish i had his luck he drew two great youth tags at 9yrs. old.

WOW! Congratulations!!

Did you say he is 9? I have a little 11 year old that weighs in at 75 lbs. He is small for his age and has a hard time holding up a rifle. Any reccomendations on what rifle set up to get my little guy so I can take him out next fall?

Congrats to your son and you for harvesting a nice buck. By taking your son hunting, you have created something good hear. These are memories you will remember forever.

Good buck for unit 2B. Nice rifle. The 7MM-08 is a good round for young hunters. Is the rifle a youth model? What make and model is it? Looks like a Weaterby Vanguard Youth model? I am looking for on for my 11 yr old son. Again, congrats.

AWESOME! Hey I have an eight year old daughter who shows interest in hunting with me. What is the min age for new mexico? or any other states that she might Qualify to apply for? Great accomplishment for Father and Son alike .

Todd,
Congrats to your son on a great buck. I actually have the second general hunt in 2B coming up. I have never been there and would love some starting points if you could, preferably areas to get away from the crowd in hopes of finding a good buck. You could PM me if you would prefer. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-06 AT 09:19PM (MST)[p]Very awesome for such a young guy to shoot such a nice buck. Congrats to both of you.

WOW!!!!!What a great start for a 9 year old....man i wish i was that lucky at 16 years old....i think dad has some competition now. TWO VERY GREAT BUCKS AND GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE AND HOPE TO SEE SOME MORE FROM THAT YOUNG GUN.

Congratulation to both of you! Your son's off to a great start and by that smile on his face he really enjoys hunting. Nothing better than seeing a young hunter enjoying the sport we all love. That buck should make a beautiful mount. The way this young man's starting dad may have his work cut out for him keeping up! Enjoy!

crazyelk,

the fifle that my son has is a howa in the youth model.my understanding is that howa makes weatherby actions.I would suggest starting out with a smaller caliber and working up.I started him out shooting a h&r .22 youth model with a scope,he spent the summer shooting at clay pigeons. It seems more fun to shoot things that break than shooting at paper targets. We then shot a couple of boxes of .222 shells.three weeks before the hunt i let him start shooting the 7mm-08.It seems as long as he had a good rest he shot well.We also practiced off shooting sticks just in case we neede them.It was a lot of fun.good luck with your young one.

Wow, congrats to your son, that is totally awesome! That big buck might be hard for him to beat for years to come, I'm jealous. Good job Dad!

Awsome buck there for such a little feller!
Now you will have your work cut out for you trying to find a better one next time he goes out with you!
But still the best thing that could happen to a little hunter

Todd,

Congrats to you and your son. I talked to my buddy Jeremy in Farmington today. I was bragging about your sons beautiful buck and getting 2B hunt updates. Brian Adair of Rim Rock Outfitters is his Cousin, I think he guided you guys??

Congrats again,

Marc

Bigtime congrats to the both of you . Your a great Dad , bring your boy all this way, your truely a great dad. Your son has already killed a buck that 90% of mule deer hunters will never get a crack at , what a beautiful buck ! Glad to hear of another young one scoring that infamous touchdown!
Again congrats ....

marc,
Yes we hunted with brian,he was a great outfitter and person to hunt with.Brian took the time to show my son the right way to glass for deer,he even let my son use some of his spare optics.the little guy was finding deer bedded under trees once brian showed him the right techniques. We both had a trip we will remember forever. He is already asking if he can get back in the draw next year!

Todd
, your in trouble brother , sounds like you have yourself a mega muley attic, its gonna get expensive!

"Ohh, you were guided."

So freakin what dude. Its a 9 year old. Out of stater.

Nice buck and good on ya for taking the kid out. Tell him congratulations and tell the naysayers to pound sand.

Didn't say anything was wrong with it DUDE. But it does make a difference to me on who gets the credit DUDE.

Being guided on this hunt makes no diffence. Public land, VAST country low deer populations. Hunting with Brian is like hunting with a buddy. He'll get you in the proxy of deer and you gotta find e'm. He taught that little feller how to glass and track on this hunt....period. The youngster had to make the shot.

This was not a private land, drive out to the alphalpha field and smoke the biggets buck in the bunch. It was a HUNT for all involved. I know Brian and he makes Clients hunt...no shooting galleries with him. If your not willing to earn your trophy, he'd rather you book with someone else. All the credit goes to Todd and his son.
