I drew this tag and I wont have the ability to scout the unit before hand. I would greatly appreciate any information that can help make the best use of my time. Thanks in advance!

Unless you know the unit pretty well, I would really consider contacting a guide. I talked to a few down ther last year and there was one who was pretty affordable. It is a big rough unit and last year they were hard to find. I can't imagine it will be as bad this year, but you never know.

It can be done but you are taking a big chance by not checking out the area before you hunt.
It can be a tough unit to hunt, but doing your homework beforehand can make a lot of difference.
I agree that if you are not going to scout, you had better look at finding a guide to help you out. Lots of wannabe's out there so check them out carefully..

Pete...I got your PM and responded before I read this...I am agreeing with Rick on this one. If you can not spend ANY time or have never been on the unit before the hunt...I also recommend a Guide if that is your plan. Rick and I both know the unit QUITE WELL and last year was a VERY tough year. I also agree with making sure you get a good guide...

+1 on the above, my friend. Rick and FLEH live (as in nearly every extra breathing moment) on the unit. If they had trouble finding bulls, trust me, you will be frustrated.

You have to ask yourself if you want to just see elk or do you want to have a great experience? Because we all know that the odds of you EVER drawing the tag again in your lifetime are slim.

Going guided is just a license to spoil yourself a little bit. :)

Thanks to all. I am considering it. Finances and vacation time are the issues. That and my love for accomplishing it DIY. Most of my hunts are usually new so I have done it before... not saying this hunt is different. I have just started my research so we will see :) Best regards and thanks for the help thus far.

Pete, congrats on the great tag! I've spent alot of time on the unit and believe me, there will be some great bulls running around this fall! Do some research on the unit(forest service maps, blm maps and search this website and even call the biologist over the area) and you will have a very good start on finding the elk, it's easy to get wrapped up in the whole "guide" gig, but it's not necessary in my opinion, the bulls will be vocal on the muzz hunt so cover some country and chase down them bugles! All their doin is callin your name to come and get em! Good luck and have a BLAST!!!

Not to worry. I think if u hunted the borders of johnson ranch or any other private ud probly be into action every day!

Its kinda funny watching those bulls on any of those cwmu's. They can stand for hours at the fence line and still never cross. They know what side of the fence to stay on !

I just got back from a beautiful weekend fishing trip at Fishlake. Unfortunately, I saw a nice bull get smacked by a car. He was grown out passed his thirds with some great mass and fronts. Wish the wife would have let me dig out the camera to get some pictures.

No I had one tied up to a tree. Was hopeing he didn't get off his line .
Did you drive around at all or just hang out at the lake ?

LOL! My brain is a little slow this morning. I am trying to recover from too many night shifts.

We mostly stayed by the lake. The roads to seven-mile and UM creek were closed. Did they open them up just for Memorial Day wknd? I can't believe how much water is up there. Everything is beyond full.

Packing the truck for my solo trip started this week. Leaving Sat AM and should arrive at Fishlake Sun. noon or so giving me at least 2 days of scouting. Done research, maps, aerials, made calls, and have places to start looking. Any "in season" advice from those who have archery or rifled hunted already would be greatly appreciated! Any advice is better than none at all. Email or PM me if you like. I am looking forward to seeing another part of this great country! Thanks.
