I'm interested in a mule deer or whitetail hunt in Wyoming areas 96 or 97. The Green Mountians or North of Jeffrey City looks good on the map. Never been to this area before. We are good ol country boys from Texas, just looking for whatever info any of y'all are willing to give. I'm sure any of y'all that already hunt this area don't want to introduce any more hunters to an already crowed area, but we are the good guys. We hunt smart and respect other hunter. I think the term y'all use is greenies; this is not us.

Thanks in advance.

MuleDeerHunter7mm,

It is a fun area with alot of deer and elk, however you just aren't going to find a very big deer in those parts. I have been hunting Green Mountain for several years, usually when our first hunts didn't produce as a last ditch effort. I killed a buck over there a few years back that was probably 23" wide, fair mass, fair horn length but nothing to get excited about. When checking him with the Game officer he said this was about the best deer they have seen come off Green in quite a few years. Elk hunting up there is a completely different story. The elk hunting is great, getting the tag is different though. I think the odds are about 3.5%! You would probably be better off hunting north of Jeff City for whitetails. It does produce some reasonable whitetails.

My sons have a couple doe tags each for this area for late November. While I don't have any reason to expect this to be a difficult hunt, and suggestions would be appreciated. The whole idea is to let the boys shoot a few deer on their youth tags, gaining experience. We won't road hunt, but would rather stay in relative proximity to vehicle access. (No need to backpack in for a doe hunt, is my thinking.) I've driven the main highway through the area, but never gotten back into the unit.
Thoughts?

Funny, that's what everyone keeps telling me, but know one is willing to give up the honey holes, which I completely understand. From my standpoint, all I can do is search the internet and call the game wardens, and hope I come across a fun hunt.
