Not much time to get in too much detail. First time hunting unit 13. With a little scouting and leads, we found a few spots we liked. Was my father, myself and my 4 year old so we really only had 1 hunter at a time due to the other one of us entertaining the youngin. Hunted the entire hunt without seeing a deer until the last day. Had found some awesome pockets with great sign, but as mentioned, was my first time in and was more of a learning lesson than anything. Last day, went back to one of the holes we had found. Had a group of 2-3 bucks running together based on the fresh sign I had found the day before. Area is Wilderness so after I hiked in early, set up to glass and hopefully pick them out. After quite a while and only picking up a few bulls and cows, was starting to get late. Dad was back at camp packing up and I only had a few more hours before he was to pick me up on the way home. There were a few pockets and a ridge I liked about 1/2 mile further in. Decided might as well go take a look while I had a chance. Once over there, noticed that 2 bucks had been hanging on this ridge by their tracks. The ridge was almost like a wave with 4 little pockets in between ranging from 70-120 yards apart each. I slowly went over every crest and glasses for the bucks in their beds. Pocket in and pocket out, no bucks but plenty of sign. Went over the crest of the last pocket and stopped...was a small pocket, glanced it over but didn't see anything. Took 1 step and the infamous breaking of branches as you bust a buck from their bed. He jumped up and ran directly away. I knew it was going to be a buck but waiting to verify how big. As soon as he came out from behind a tree, saw plenty of rack, and knew he would do the trick. Flipped the safety, shot and he fell in his tracks.

Like I had mentioned. we didn't see much but just the fact that this was the first year my son was able to go on a hunt with us made it one of the most spectacular hunts I've ever had the priveledge to experience. Not the biggest buck, 4x5 at 25 inches, but almost means more to me than my 220+, 32 inch 9x7 I shot years ago, well almost... :)

Great looking Buck and one hell of a set of eye guards too. Looks like your little hunter is into the fun of it and seems to be giving the camera person the "Raseberry" from the looks of his mouth. LOL

Jimmy,

You and your dad have taken some nice bucks over the years. This is another in the string. Congrats on the buck and on having your son along to share the adventure.

Take care,

Doug

Doug, thank you! Would like to get back to some of our haunts in AZ but we keep finding new spots in NM to explore! Was a great hunt and look forward to many more to come with my boy!
