Let me start out by thanking God, my wife, and all the guys on MonsterMuleys.com that provided me information and advice for my 2006 Unit 21 hunt. I'll try to make this short and sweet.

Here's the bad - My camper broke down in Grand Junction about 70 miles from my hunting spot, so I had to leave it behind and live out of my truck during the hunt. Also, I picked up a weird bug and was sick during the hunt. Here's the good - While I was in Rangely, I saw over 150 deer, many of them were bucks. While scouting on Fri., I saw 3 bucks that were better than my deer and on opening day I passed on 3 bucks similar to the one I took and I blew a stalk on a nice 5X5 that was about as wide as mine but his antlers were wider at the top.

I shot my deer with about 15 minutes of shooting light remaining on Sat. while I was driving back to camp on an oil road. He was following a doe and not paying attention to me, so I just parked the truck and casually grabbed my rifle and walked out into the sage a good ways from the road. I was using a Thompson Center Encore in 7 MM Mag, so I had to break it open to put the shell into the chamber. I didn't make eye contact with the deer, until I dropped down on one knee and put the cross hairs on him. He was just standing there broadside at 125 yards looking at me and I nailed him on top of the shoulder. He didn't take 3 steps before he fell.

After I shot, I started second guessing myself about shooting a deer on opening day, but I'm very happy that I got him even if he's not the biggest deer in the county. I don't know what he'll score - any guesses? He's just over 24 inches wide, very tall and has very good mass.

I really appreciate all the help I received on this hunt and would be glad to share what I learned about the unit with anyone whose thinking about hunting it.

Can someone please tell me how to add the pictures to the site? Thanks.

That is a clone to one of the bucks we took in unit 21 last year. My guess is a couple points either side of 180. Beautiful buck congratulations.

That's a bruiser if I ever saw one, love the mass. He should easily reach the mid 180s. Conrats.

Sweet buck, I'll say gross green score - 176. great deer, love the mass. Great mature buck!

Beautiful buck. I wouldn't be second guessing myself if I were you. He's a shooter, first day or any other day after that. Way to go.

That's a nice buck!
Thats my favorite antler "flow" nice and global.
Congratulations.
