have all my backpacking equipment ready, and am considering a ml hunt in units 43 or 44 colorado.talked with jason carter and he said unit 44 would be a tougher hunt than unit 43.was looking for info. anybody might have on either of these units, are these good choices for the ml hunt in 06 it was sept.9-17 looking to go in 07. thanks

43 definately has some good bucks and some of the most beautiful country anywhere, but if I were chosing it solely on going after a wallhanger buck, 44 (holy cross wilderness) would be my choice. Definately have to get farther from the road, have to be in killer shape, and be part mountain goat, but might be well worth the time.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

I bow hunt the Holy Cross....... and have done 43,47,471 a couple times....

If you are going with Jason Carter... you certainly don't need much more info than he can give you!

thanks for that info. should i concentrate my hunting above timberline that time of year, one posting on this site stated
that most of the bucks would be at or above 10,000 ft early on.

There is lots of country without many deer in both of those units so be prepared for long, hard days of hiking without seeing many deer. There are some good bucks but you will have your work cut out for you!

I hunted 44 this year during the early rifle season. The unit does not have alot of bucks numbers wise but there are some good bucks in the unit. I was in the Holy Cross and spent a total of 11 days ( scouting and hunting ) before I found a buck. The unit is physically demanding. I was 7 to 8 miles back.
I had rain, snow, wind, and a couple of nice days. I took a buck and had to pack him out 5 miles to the trailhead and then go back and get my camp. I was told the deer were up above timberline. I have no doubt that that's true but I found mine right at timberline ( about 11,500 ) It's beautiful country and I had a great hunt.

that sounds like an exciting hunt jh.i live in the east but love the highcountry .i spent 14 days this past summer hiking in northern new mexico.i grew up hiking the appalachian mtns. around my home, and deer hunting there also.but anyway thanks for that info i appreciate it alot.
