Heading out to far West Texas where the cactus grow and the fences are low. My son and I leave the day after Thanksgiving. Wondering if anybody has hunted out there before. Seems like some of you guys might even live out that way? maybe Huntsonora? Do the deer hang on the hillsides or in the flats? Any insights on the similarities and differences between hunting in the Texas desert and the rockies would be helpful.

Any and all helpful info will be rewarded with lots of pics from when we get back ;-)

thanks,

WH

Hunting in west Texas around the Odessa/Midland area is like being in thick oak-brush in the Rockies.... Mesquite about 10ft high everywhere... that's why they use feed buckets and tower stands.... have to get up in nosebleed heights to see down into that stuff...

Wrong ! Not much mesguite out there . Gain elevation and glass your ass off. Hopefully the ranch your hunting doesnt have jeeps and trucks running the roads1 You should do fine in Gods country!

Depends on what area of west texas. Some of it is foothills with cactus and some brush. Some is tons of brush and relatively flat, and some places are the sandhills from Muleshoe south to Midland/Odessa. I know many people who have hunted all of the above and all come back with respectable deer. Sandhill bucks seem to be the biggest though from what I have seen.

Thanks for the info, guys. Looks like I should've been a little more specific. We'll be near Fort Davis in the Davis mts. Ranch sits at about 6,500 ft elevation. The ranch has very few roads, and it's only our party on the ranch. No feeding, baiting or stands on the ranch-Yahoo!

From what I've seen in pictures, there are draws, some mountains, and yes, definitely cactus flats. I'm trying to figure out where these desert deer like to hang. What do they eat out there?

thanks,

WH

Just look for the feeders

Thought I might get that. Re-read the post. No feeders, no blinds, no safari-style jeeps, low fence, desert deer hunt. Texas is a big place, and there's about 800 miles between where I'll be and where you see the the hunts taking place on Buckmasters and Real Tree Roadtrips or whatever. Anyone with knowledge about the deer habits in the mountains of West Texas, I welcome the information. Good luck to everyone in your hunts.

We hunt south of Fort Davis near Marfa. It's not very different from hunting the brush country here at home in Wyoming. The daytime temperatures seem to be about 70 when we've been there the past couple of years, so the deer are out early and bedded in the shady spots during the day. Look for north slopes, small draws and places to get out of the sun. Some of the bucks have been out feeding as late as 9-10 am, but they usually bed early.

Get to a high point and glass with the sun at your back early and late. During mid day, sneak and peek into draws and keep the wind in your favor. That's neat country and you will have fun. The rut is not too strong in that area right after Thanksgiving, but toward the end of the season (Dec 10) it seems to get stronger. The comment about the bucks is right. We don't see the bucks right with the does, but they are often within a half mile.

Good luck and hope you bust a brute. Shoot me a pm if I can help.
