I just can't stop hunting in 06. I didn't bag anything during the Kaibab hunt and I was wondering if anyone has any pointers on where to hunt near town on the late archery hunt. I live near the Superstitions, hows hunting the backside of them? Or are there any other good areas to find some deer? Not looking for honey holes, just need to find some deer to glass (preferably mule deer?) I'm just looking for some pointers, also does anyone know if the deer in that area are in the rut during late December into January?

My wife is having our first boy in early December, so I need somewhere close to hunt. Since the Superstitions are close to where I live, any pointers would be great.

Thanks,

Utaz

When I lived in Phoenix 20+ years ago, one of our favorite Dec archery hunts was chasing mule deer around the Black Hills near the 96 ranch, between Florence Junction and Oracle. We would see lots and lots of deer every day, and sometimes come across a really big muley!! Like I said that was many years ago so don't know what it is like now, but something I would try to find info on if I ever moved back to Phoenix.

like you i have not had enough of chasing mule deer this year.Did the early archery hunt close to were you are and two rilfe hunts,so far for this year i am 0-3,all i can do is waite for dec. 15 so i can go out again.in your area i have seen one doe early in the mourning, she was like a ghost in the shadows, and found some really impressive sheds.in the three years that i have hunted this area i have seen lots of does and only one buck, the buck that drop them sheds.as far as locating deer in the supersititions start by talking to the hores back riders, they see more then they'll say but can get started in the right direction. after that just get out on foot and start hiking the hill. be careful not to get lost,it is easy to do out there. take your gps.good luck.

I shot a 5X4 in Utah during the rifle hunt. However, I just want to get back out and glass and stalk some deer.

The Superstitions can be good. I see more mule deer in the western part and at the lower elevations. There are whitetails in the easter half and the higher elevations. The mountains are fun to hunt because they are so close to town, however I didn't make it out there this year. Last April I was going to Canyon Lake to fish and nearly had a collision with a decent 4 x 4. He jumped out into the road at first light, right by Lost Dutchman park. I've heard there are some deer in the Usery Mts. also. Hopes this helps.
