Got lucky and drew a 2nd season tag! Just wondering if anyone has hunted it before and what I can expect to see and if anyone has any pictures of some bulls from 17.

I am hunting a couple of weeks after you. I have never hunted this unit. Maybe we could pool what we learn. I would love to hear how your hunt goes and be grateful for anything you learn from your hunt. I am learning that the barren BLM grassland can hold some BIG bulls. 1/4 of the governors tag bulls come from that region. There is a series on the sportsmans channel called " on your own adventures" and the host killed a nice archery bull out in the grassland last year and almost had a shot at a huge one at 55 yds. This is apparently a 3 mile walk in before you hunt area. Good luck. Let me know if you are interested in pooling resources.

I think the first thing you need to do is get a map of YOUR unit. Then look at it on google earth. If you walk 3 miles of grassland in unit 17 you are either going in little circles, your on private land, or you are in the wrong unit.

Yeah I'm more than happy to pool resources. I've got a little info already and I'm just waiting for a map to arive to see if it matches up.

I huntd it last year in the 3rd week and had a pretty good hunt. It is a lot bigger country then you think. It does have some low land stuff but not any elk in it. That country is thick with juniper and pinon! You better find water and you will find elk. lots of bulls in the 280 310 range with some bigger. They are fun to chase around while listening to there bugles. PM me if you want more info and I could help you out!

Thanks for setting me strait. After further research I see the grassland is in 16E. If you know these units this well, would you be willing to help me get started off in the right direction? I'm willing to work hard for a good bull. Any useful info would be appreciated. Unit 17 is big and I am too far away to make enough scouting trips to cover much of the unit. If you could help me narrow down my scouting to a couple of specific areas I would be grateful.

Thanks for your time,

Derek
